Oahu - 2

The Wilson Tunnel & Nuuanu Pali Drive

I was a little boy at the time but it creeped me out. I was up on the Waianae Mountains with some relatives of mine, and we when stopped to check out the view. It was a nice view so we stayed up there pretty long, so when we finally felt good enough to take the trip higher we heard lost of noises. It sounded like angry people, so we thought that we shouldn't pay attention and we veered off away from them. We made it to our pit stop where we went and had lunch. When we were finished, we started our hike back down. My uncle folks said not to lose my way from the path or the menehune people is going to get me. I was like "Yeah right, there’s nothing up here!" Then when we was half way from our hike, I had to use the bathroom really badly so I told my cousin to stay back and wait. So after I did my ‘business’, we tried and hurry to catch up with them. As soon as we heard someone, we ran straight toward it because we thought would be them since they have big mouths and talk loud. Then when we caught up pretty close to what we heard, the sound vanished. We didn’t hear anything for a little while and got scared. Then moments later, we heard someone calling our names. It wanted us to go towards them and whatever it was it sounded friendly. So my cousin followed and I pulled her back. I told her it could be those people who was yelling really loud. They sounded like bad people. I insisted that we go back the way we came and try retrace our families footprints. Then the voices got louder and angrier and it sounded just like the people who were yelling earlier. Then we heard something running closer and closer to us, so my and I cousin dug out back to the spot we had a picnic and never move because the only thing that was blocking us was a few boulders and when we heard something that was walking just little below the rocks. My cousin and I screamed really loud and it ended up to be my grandmother. We told her the whole story on what had just happened and she said "Up there is where the menehunes live”, and the smartest thing we had done that whole day was to go back to the rocks because it was my families scared spot. I no longer know where and how to get up to this spot because I was really young and it was my first encounter of eerie voices Throughout the day, I asked my relatives if they had heard any voices other than ours on the trip and they replied that the trail we were on is a scared trail and no tourist or anybody but us should be up there. The only thing I remember on the trip was that we had to go really high up in the mountains and we were close to the drop on Waianae side. (By Adam)

My girlfriend and I had to live on Mokuleia Beach for few months to save for our own place. I did a lot of night fishing, which I liked. One night, it was really late and I had caught a lot of fish. I had a fire going to cook the fish. It was dark, but I could see two men walking on the beach toward me, and stopped where the light from the fire wouldn't show their faces. They just stood there, not saying anything. I welcomed them over and invited them to come and eat, but they still just stood there, not saying anything. So I offered them some fish. Again, nothing. So I tossed some over to them. When the fish hit the ground, they both disappeared! It was ignorant of me not to remember hunter's rule that when you hunt from the sea it's always advised to make "an offer". (By B.C.)

Watched at Iolani Palace

Watched at Iolani Palace

It was Christmas day 2004, and my boyfriend and I had decided that we were going to look at the Honolulu Christmas Lights, where they have all the different Christmas trees and decorations and stuff, right next to City Hall. Anyhow his mom works at the state capital and has a parking pass to park at the Iolani Palace parking lot, so of course the smart thing to do was to use it and park there. It was nighttime and we were the only ones to park there, and I kinda suspected that the palace would be haunted, but of course, so it was really scary for me. So as we're walking to city hall it was dark and there no lights and we just kept walking and nothing happened. (Well, I always have allergies depending on the season, and the whole day I didn't have any sort of sneezing or running nose or anything like that, I was fine.) So as we are walking back, I tell him about how the palace is haunted and we tried looking in, but of course we're not that dumb to actually look for anything. Being the scaredy cat that I am I hurriedly get into the car thru the driver side and he gets in, and I'm sitting on his lap, and we start making out. Mind you of what I said earlier about my allergies, I had no signs of any allergies at all. So as we are kissing I start to feel my nose run, and I sniff but it’s not mucus, I smell blood, and I can taste it too. At first, I didn't think anything of it, but my nose wouldn't stop running, so I wiped my nose and see that it’s dark and sticky. I get up to turn on the light, and my hand and my nose where all bloody. The weird thing is that I never ever have nosebleeds, only if I had been blowing my nose too hard from allergies. Another weird thing about that night was I kept getting the feeling that we were being watched, especially as we were kissing. It was as though someone was watching us right through the driver’s side window, right where we were sitting. (Anonymous)

Aloha, I’m a born and raised local boy from the Island of Oahu. Well this story is around the Waialua area on the North Shore of O’ahu, I have been living here in Waialua for about 8 months now I use to live in Nu’uanu, I moved here because I wanted to get away from the city life, but for a couple of months now I’ve noticed a lot of strange and bizarre things, I live down the street of St. Michael’s school and Church, the first thing that was creepy was how things in my house would always be missing, moved, or you’d hear strange voices. One night when I was talking to my fiancée on my cell phone outside, I noticed a man walk up the hill (because where my house is there is a small hill) I turned my head for on second and this man was gone just vanished!! So I ran up the hill to look for this guy and he was nowhere to be found. Also I’ve been hearing what seems to be children’s voices and giggling. I live right behind the Waialua River so it's impossible for anyone to get back there, even some nights I hear a woman’s voice or I hear a women crying. The next thing that happens is in my house, a lot of things move around a lot. Say if I put something on the floor one night, the next day it would be on the table or upside down for some reason I know this sounds weird but it really happened. Another thing that happen to my brother when he was driving home from work at night he drives down the Kunia road a lot, and just after he passed the golf course, something ran in front of his car and from what he described to be as a "Black Shadow". Our neighbor tells us that this neighborhood was once a hospital for all the plantation workers. (By Josh)

In 1982, I was out with my brother, and our dates. We had gone to see a movie in Waikiki and decided to drive the Old Pali afterwards. In the course of our conversation on the way there, the subject of the H-3 project (which at that time was being shut down) came up. Someone mentioned that “Just because a bunch of old Hawaiians wrote on the walls, they think it is a sacred site”. Big mistake. As we approached the beginning of the Old Pali, where the trees start, we saw a large brown Pit Bull standing in the middle of the road, blocking our way. My brother, who was driving slowly, went around the dog who turned its body so that it was facing us. When we passed it, my brother said that the steering in the car was starting to go. He could barely turn the wheel. At that point, he decided that enough was enough and tried to turn around. (We had heard enough stories about the Old Pali). After about two minutes of turning the car around, we were able to head back down the way we had come. The dog stepped back in our path and looked like it was ready to charge. My brother sped past the dog and as we looked behind us, it was running (close to 35 mph) behind us. We were all screaming for him to drive faster. When we got to the entrance of the Pali highway, we looked back and he was gone. The next evening, something got into my pigeon coup and killed 12 of my birds. There was blood all over the walls and floors, as if someone had intentionally smeared the blood on. I assumed it was a mongoose that entered through the traps. The next day I told my neighbor the story about the birds, (not mentioning anything about our experience with the dog) and he said he saw a large brown Pit Bull going up my driveway at about 11:00 pm the previous night, which is the same time we were at the Old Pali, two nights prior. The damn thing followed us all way the home to Aiea. DO NOT DISRESPECT THE HAWAIIAN LEGENDS. (By Big Mig)

We used to party in the heiau parking lot that was overlooking Waimea Bay. There were two stories for the place. 1. Never take the rocks in the sacred area, violating the sanctity of the area would cause trouble. I know of two instances where guys thought they were macho and moved the stones. They both crashed their cars on their way down the hill at the hairpin turn. Fortunately, they survived and were a little smarter as a result. 2. A similar story about the dogs; if you went past the fork in the side walk you could hear dogs bark and if you stayed on the other side, you couldn't hear them (or vice versa, too many years gone by). I know this happened. (By Barb C.)

Kunia

Kunia

In the summer of 1987, I returned home for the summer from the mainland. My friends were all talking about a weird event that happened to them as they were "ghost busting" in Kunia. As I understood the story, they were walking around when one of my friends saw a human-like apparition and they took off back towards the car, where another of my friends heard a rustling sound in some bushes. Being very skeptical, I convinced a bunch of us to go down there again. We drove down there and parked on the road opposite of an open field. As I got out of the car to relieve myself (I had just drank a Big Gulp), I heard something in the bushes across the street. Not moving and staring intensely, I watched the bush for signs of movement or the reflection of eyes in the car's headlights. Not seeing anything, I slowly moved back into the car, where someone was staring right into the same bushes that I was. He said that he saw someone or something move in the bush. As we drove away a little shaken, my friend explained that what just happened was the same as what happened earlier. One person saw something in the bushes and another person had heard but not seen something in that bush. Later, we were parked next to the field. We all saw what looked like two people standing in the middle of the field. Being very dark, it was hard to focus on the objects. After 15 to 20 minutes, the objects were still standing in the same place. I concluded that they must be small trees or bushes. The next day we went back and there were no bushes or trees in that area. (By Wahiawaboy)

The "Ghost" Cane Hauler

The "Ghost" Cane Hauler

Two friends and I were driving in Waialua, between the Weed Circle and Kaukonahua road. It was around 2 a.m. We decided to pull off the road onto a dirt road used by large cane hauler trucks that are the size of land-movers to smoke a cigarette and "talk story". The cane road ran parallel to the regular road. We enter where the cane road forked. The right fork went up into the cane fields and the left fork crossed the regular road and went into cane fields on the other side. We weren't too far in from the main road. We turned around and parked behind a bus stop facing the opening to the main road. Asking about cane haulers, Randy, who was driving said that he used to live in the area and no trucks ran that late. While we were talking, headlights shined on us from behind. Looking back, the headlights were high of the ground and I figured it was a cane hauler. Randy panicked but we managed to get off the cane road in ample time. As we drove down the regular road toward the weed circle, we noticed that the truck never came out to cross the road. Plus, Randy kept insisting that the mill doesn't run that late. So, we turned around to investigate. The first thing odd was that the flashing beacon used to signal when cane haulers are running wasn't on. Then we noticed that both the cane road heading up into the field and the cane road across the street were both chained closed. A quick spin down to the sugar mill confirmed the weirdness as it was not in operation. (By WahiawaBoy)

One of my friends told me about the ship he works on by Aloha Tower. He mostly hears things than see things. At times, he said he would see shadows or a very faint figure of a person. I remember one, he said that he and his friend went diving during the day and they were in 40 ft deep water and saw a tiger shark coming their way. All of a sudden, a diver from nowhere came and scared the shark away then the mystery diver disappeared. My friend said they were trying to look for that diver and thank him but he was nowhere to be found. My friend asked the kupuna about it and the kupuna said he heard the same story from other people before. (Anonymous)

The Mysterious Diver

The Mysterious Diver

One night, about 6 of my friends and I decided to go check out the Pali Lookout. This was before they started to put up gates and restricted access to the lookout during the late night hours. Pali Lookout was windy as is normal and several other cars were present. After playing in the wind for a while, we all started walking down the Old Pali Road. Nothing was unusual as we walked down, but after awhile all of us stopped in our tracks. We were at the entrance to a long dark tunnel. The arch of the tunnel was made of large blocks and inside was pitch black. As we discussed about whether we should continued on through the tunnel, one of my friends in the back of the pack took off back up the road. Of course, this triggered all of us to run all the way back up to the Lookout. Not thinking that anything was abnormal, we left. It was only after several days had gone by that someone mentioned that the Old Pali Road had no tunnels. (By Wahiawaboy)

The Wilson Tunnel & Nuuanu Pali Drive

One night I was driving through the Wilson tunnel back toward town and was surprised to see a Hawaiian warrior standing on the side holding, what looked like a spear. And another occasion, my husband and I was driving through Nuuanu Pali Drive, and I saw another Hawaiian warrior standing on top of the slope that runs alongside the road in the vicinity where the haunted 13-steps are. (By Alison)

My father (who is a skeptic regarding things of the supernatural) told me this story of his personal experience that happened to him and two of his friends back the mid 1950's.... My father and two of his friends (one friend which I'll call "Daniel" and the other "Tommy") all decided one day to go fishing on the west shore of Oahu. My father's friend Daniel was driving and my father sat in the front seat while Tommy sat in the back. They were close to their destination (around Makua Cave) when Tommy said, "Eh, I gotta go shishi (pee) really bad man! Both Daniel and my father both said at the same time, "Brah, you cannot hold em? We’re almost there!” Tommy said, "No, I cannot! Pull over, now!" With that, Daniel pulled over, and Tommy went running to an area where there was an area of high weeds (that had a triangular shape to it) and began to pee. About a minute later, Tommy pulled up his zipper, turned around, and took a couple of steps toward the car. At that moment, my father and Daniel saw Tommy get hit by "something". My father said that it looked like someone tackled Tommy, hitting him and lifting him off the ground and landing a couple feet away from the impact area. Tommy landed on his back, with both of his hands grasping at his throat, as if trying to pull something away. My father and Daniel immediately ran to Tommy's side and yelled, "Tommy! What’s wrong brah!" My father said Tommy was turning from a red color to a blue color, all the while struggling to get something off of his throat. My father said that he felt a sense of panic he never experienced before or since. He said that Tommy looked like he was about to die! After a few minutes later, whatever had its grip on Tommy, released, and Tommy bolted up in a seated position on the ground gasping for air! A couple of minutes later after he regained his breath and composure, he yelled at my father and Daniel exclaiming, "Why didn't you guys help me! There was a big Hawaiian lady sitting on top of my chest and choking me!” My father and Daniel looked at each other, both knowing that they did not see such a thing. After they got Tommy back into the car, curiosity made my father to go and investigate the area where Tommy had pee'd. My father waded deeper into the high weeds (that was shaped like a triangle), and was shocked to see old gravestones with Hawaiian names on them. He said that they dated back to the 1800's. After telling me this story, my father said that his skepticism was badly shaken. My father said that even though Tommy accidentally did the deed, he was still punished for showing disrespect. Then he gave me advice that I would remember to this day! He said, "Be careful not to disrespect anything on this island!" (By GeeBee)
