I guess because it's a spiritual place and I love Hawaiian people. Anyway, one day, my friends and I were riding past the North Shore and decided to make a stop at Pupukea Heiau to look at the view. As we rode through the trail heading up to the heiau, I suddenly began feeling really happy and safe, and could see in my "mind's eye" that there were a bunch of Hawaiian spirits from the heiau escorting our car and looking happy to see "me". As soon as we got there, I thought they were going to escort me as I walked around the heiau and surrounding area, but they all stood on the outskirts smiling. My feeling was they were giving me my time and space, probably knowing that I go there for more than just a look around. (By EL) The construction of O’ahu’s H-1 and H-3 freeways involved mysterious, ghostly experiences, causing construction workers to walk off the job in fear. In the construction of H-1’s Wilson tunnel huge boulders would be moved, only for it to be back in its original place the following morning. And even today, people driving through the Wilson tunnel claim to have seen ancient Hawaiian warriors in the tunnel. Before and during the construction of H-3 freeway, it was said that it is being built over ancient Hawaiian burial grounds that became proven when construction workers unearthed skeletal remains and other indications of an ancient and sacred burial site. During the H-3 construction, workers would walk off the job, due to paranormal occurrences, hearing cries of the “unseen” and sightings of ghostly figures. Those ghostly experiences and Hawaiian protestors striving to preserve and prevent the desecration of sacred Hawaiian sites, prompted delays in the freeway’s construction that lasted seven years. (By Alika) Oahu's Haunted Freeways Oahu's Haunted Freeways Aiea High School Aiea High School This incident actually happened in broad daylight while class was in session! Our teacher was teaching class, when suddenly, there was consistent tapping sounds that started from one end of the classroom to the other end, getting louder and louder each time. Everyone in the class was already freaking out, knowing that there are a lot of ghostly experiences always happening at our school. Our teacher already knew it was "an experience" taking place, and she told "it" to stop because she's teaching class, and if "it" wants to stay, then stay. Just then, one of the desks actually moved to the side by itself, and everyone screamed! (By L.A.) Bridge Over Kipapa Glutch Bridge Over Kipapa Glutch Late one night, I was driving on Kipapa Gulch's bridge on Kamehameha highway and began having a really cold and nervous feeling. Looking in my rear view mirror, I saw a greenish ball of light following my truck that came and stopped right behind my cab's window! Being Hawaiian and very connected with my grandpa on the Big Island, I "called" him. In just a few seconds the light disappeared. The next day, I called grandpa to tell him what happened. He was already expecting my call. (By GJ) I heard stories of people experiencing some trippy stuff camping out near Kahana valley, like tents being lifted and thrown to the side when there's barely any breeze, seeing night marchers coming from the valley or crossing the highway, and hearing native Hawaiian chanting in the dead of night. Even camping out at Kahana beach would have scary experiences, like once while we camped there, we were lying down ready to sleep when a man's shadow came walking and stopped right by us, but then no one was there! (By James) Kahana Valley Kahana Valley Wild Boar Hunting Wild Boar Hunting Years ago, my friends and I used to take our dogs along when we go hunting up the mountain trails near Kaaawa side. We'd park our trucks and walk the rest of the way in with the dogs, being careful not to stray too far from each other. Once in a while we'd suddenly feel a strong sense of "kapu" in an area. Even our dogs would stop and stare in the same spot and start walking backwards with their tails between their legs. Sometimes they would pick up something before we do, and there is no way we would continue on, so we would respectfully, just turn around and head toward another direction. We hunters know that dogs make for good companion when hunting in the islands, for more than just hunting purposes. (By Danny) Kipapa Gulch Kipapa Gulch I used to work nights down in Kipapa Gulch doing some welding work, near where the chicken farm is, or was. Nights used to be pitch black down there in the gulch, and of course, scary, even for a big guy like me. Many nights, I’d hear horrifying screams, native drums beating, and once in a while, see night marchers coming down from further up the valley. There were times when I’d feel icy cold and the hairs on my arm would stand up, then I’d hear someone walking directly behind me, but no one would be there. It would just follow me around and watch me work. I would just try and focus on my work, trying to ignore these experiences. But one night, I saw something I couldn’t ignore. I began to hear a really big person walking barefoot on the dirt. I turned to look and saw this incredibly huge and extremely tall man walking toward the area I was working. It was an ancient Hawaiian warrior. His height was easily 7-feet tall and he had a big club in his hands that had razor-sharp shark’s teeth along the edges. As he walked closer to me. My first reaction was to dig out when I saw him, but something told me to just stand still. Sure enough, he just looked right at me then walked past. Next time I spoke to the person I was doing the work for, I mentioned these experiences, and he wasn’t surprised, saying things like that happens all the time down there in Kipapa Gulch, at night. (Anonymous) Where I lived years ago, was near a mountainside, where I could sense an old Hawaiian man's spirit. Feeling he was a nice spirit, I said out loud one day when I was in the yard, "You're welcome to come inside if you like." One night when I went to bed for the night, I felt him come and sit at my bedside while I slept. It was such a nice feeling, and that night was the best and most comforting, warmest feeling sleep I had in my entire life, where I also felt very protected from any type of harm there is. He was also a courteous man, never overstaying his welcome or invading my privacy. I enjoyed having him around. Unfortunately, we had to move within that year and I sadly never experienced him again. (By Mary) Old Hawaiian Man Old Hawaiian Man Old Hawaiian Medicine Man Old Hawaiian Medicine Man I live on the Leeward side of Oahu on the edge of the mountain, and one day, my son wasn’t feeling well and had a belly ache. As I sat on his bedside, I decided to try and do some healing. As I placed my hand on his tummy, he was suddenly asleep, and I saw a hand of an old man placed over mine. Next thing I knew, I could hear Hawaiian chanting with the sounds of drums that seemed to be coming from all around. After just a few minutes, it was silent and I felt my son would feel much better. Sure enough, he woke up about half hour later, feeling good as new. Normally, I’d think a short nap did the trick, but because of my experience, I knew that a special healing took place, with my friend, the old Hawaiian medicine man! (By Anonymous) A Little Hut on the Hill A Little Hut on the Hill A Little Hut on the Hill A Hawaiian Warrior A Hawaiian Warrior I remember when I was little, I was in the garden with my grandpa and grandma. While they were tending to their vegetable garden, I stood nearby and saw a Hawaiian warrior that was dressed in a tanned or beige-colored "malo" and carried a long spear-looking staff. He came near me, smiled, and nodded his head, as if to say, "HI". He didn't speak much, and I recall not thinking anything was out of the ordinary, like my grandparents weren't able to see him or anything because I thought they were just too busy with their garden. Soon after, the nice Hawaiian man waved goodbye, and disappeared into thin air before he reached the end of the front yard. (By LL) One day, we drove toward the windward side, taking H-3. About half a mile before the tunnel, I started feeling spirits coming around our car. Soon, I noticed everybody in the car suddenly got really quiet and still, literally in a zone. Then the radio stopped, but nobody reacted. (Sure, maybe it was the station's 'technical difficulty' but I knew it wasn't.) Then I felt a higher spirit of some nature come and all those spirits were gone. Everyone came out of the zone and the radio started playing again. It was a weird experience, and nobody seemed to have been aware of anything, not even the radio stopping! (By Felicia) An Experience on H-3 An Experience on H-3 One long weekend, a bunch of our family and relatives went camping at Mokuleia beach side years ago. Of course, the younger members of our clan always stayed up late. One night when most of us had fallen asleep, my brother and two male cousins were still awake talking stories. While they were awake that night, they told us they saw a fire torch on the bottom area of the mountains near Kaena Point side, going left to right, as if someone was running back and forth. They figured it had to be a Hawaiian spirit, but because it was only one torch, maybe it's not night marchers. The next day, they decided to go look around the area where they saw the fire torch going back and forth. They really weren't expecting to find anything, but they saw a little, really old grassy hut. They guessed it was probably a menehune hut, but found it odd why it was so small, even for a menehune, where it was just enough room for a small child to sit inside without much room to move around. Nobody went close to the hut and nobody touched anything, fearing it was taboo to touch anything. (By Blayne) Pupukea Heiau Pupukea Heiau Oahu Oahu Few years ago, I was passing Kipapa Gulch near Mililani on Kam Highway, and as I was passing over Kipapa Gulch, I found myself feeling connected to Menehunes, for some reason. I didn't think much of it, until in the middle of that very night because to my surprise, they followed me home! I woke up to find about 5 of them in my room at the foot of my bed, leaning over each other like little kids, peeking over to see if I was asleep without waking me. They were actually really cute, in nature, because of the way they were playfully pushing each other out of the way to have a look. I've heard stories of Menehunes, but most of the stories I've heard made Menehunes scary and mean, but in my experience, what ever for, were really friendly and sweet. Though I've never seen those wonderful souls again, nor do I understand why they followed me home, of all people (because I'm not even of Hawaiian ancestry), they gave me one of the sweetest "ghostly" experiences I ever had! (Anonymous) On a Cruise Up Pupukea Heiau On a Cruise Up Pupukea Heiau Back in high school, one night me, my girlfriend, and our friends all piled up in a station wagon and took a cruise down North Shore. We were having fun drinking a little, and decided let’s go up Pupukea heiau, so we went. Driving in we were laughing and making big noise. We got there, got out of the car, but something really made us feel like we had to get out of there. The girls started feeling scared, so we decided to leave. As we were driving out we all felt like somebody was watching us and following close behind, but nobody was there. Then felt like that ‘somebody’ wanted to come in the car, so the girls started screaming for us guys to close the car windows, so we did. Then all of a sudden there was something kind of heavy that just dropped right on the roof of the car. The girls were screaming, and me the driver, tried to high-tail it out of there, but anybody who been up there know that the road going in and out from the heiau has dips, making it hard to drive fast. Well finally we made it to the main road and stopped on the side to look on top of the car but nothing was there, as we expected. Of course everybody was sober by then, and felt we did a really stupid and disrespectful thing by going up there the way we did. (Anonymous) Me and my friend used to go fishing once in a while at a natural made pool behind Waianae High School. We heard stories about menehunes at the school and being a hunter too, can see their trails nearby. One night when we went fishing around 1-2:00 in the middle of the night, we hid close by to see if the stories of the menehunes were true. We didn't expect to go through anything but we saw them! We saw their clear shadows against the wall of little men running from one end of the building to the other that was right in front of us, and you could hear their bare feet running on the sidewalk. Had abaout 5 of them, all running together. We didn't more or make a sound and at the same time we wasn't scared because the menehunes felt like cool people, nice, and not like how people say they're mean and stuff. I don't know, this group was 'cute' and kinda funny. I don't know how we knew that. Just felt like that to us I guess. Looks like the stories are true! (By "J") My friend Morgan always loved to ride his mountain bike everywhere and at all hours of the night and day. I guess that’s what he liked to do by himself maybe because of exercise? Oh well, he went everywhere with his bike so when they were building the H-3 freeway he decided to take a ride on it at night even though the construction was not done with it yet, especially with the tunnel part on the Halawa side. What he told me and my other friend was that night. He rode from the beginning of the Aiea side all the way to the tunnel. The freeway was basically built but when he came up to the tunnel, it was basically a huge hole in the mountain, going very deep and very far. He was kinda a risk taker so he decided to ride with a flashlight attached to the bike as far as he could without getting scared. I guess about 3-5 minutes deep into the mountain he heard someone calling his name, "Morgan! Morgan!" in the darkness, all by himself. No one else was with him. He just freaked out and got the hell out of the tunnel. As soon as he got out, he still had ways to go until he saw any type of houses or buildings next to the freeway. He told us that while he was riding his bike out really fast, he could still hear someone calling his name behind him. He never looked back for the fear of what might have happened to him. But he vowed never to do that again. (By Anonymous) Calling Ghosts on H-3 Calling Ghosts on H-3 Night Diving Off Kaena Point Night Diving Off Kaena Point When we used to go night diving off Kaena Point, we would make a fire on the shore. Every time we came up after diving, a white owl would be sitting by the fire. It would sit there by us until we gave him a fish. Then it would fly off. One night while diving off Kaena Point, I speared a lobster. I asked my diving partner to hold my spear. Someone came next to me and grabbed my spear. I put the lobster ingot my bag, then turned to my partner. There was no one there. I noticed my partner about 30 yards away and swam over to him. I asked for my spear and he had no idea what I was talking about. I told him that I called him over and asked him to hold my spear while I put the lobster away. He said that none of that happened. I went back to the area where the event occurred and looked for my spear. I couldn't find it. Another night, we were on the shore shining our lights up on the mountain. All of a sudden, we saw a white figure up on the side of the mountain. It looked like a lady kneeling and praying with her head down. While shining the lights on her, she looked up, turned her head to look down at us, and then disappeared. We quickly left the area.
