NIGHT VISITORSChoking ghosts. Pressing spirits. Night hags. They're pretty much all the same type of "no good" spirits that come when you're at rest, catching you right at the brink of being most vulnerable to its terror. In 1990, I was a security officer at the Kaimana Beach Hotel it was 4:00 a.m. when I sat down to rest in the Tatami room of the Miyako restaurant, when I was held down by a ghost and could not move, trying to yell with no voice coming out. I fought with all my mind, saying the name of Jesus in my mind and it finally let go. (By Miyagi) The Miyako Restaurant Choking Ghost in Royal Kunia I had an experience with the "Choking Ghost" recently. On Friday 23rd, 2004, I was getting ready for bed and when I laid down and put my head on the pillow something grabbed my arm and pulled me to the center of the bed. Then my other arm was pulled out to my other side. I could not move either arm and then I felt the feeling of a large pressure on my chest. I couldn't breathe at all. I fought as hard as I could but then I started to black out. Right before faded I gave it one last fight and broke free. I was all by myself in the apartment and my roommate was in South Carolina. I can’t explain what happened but it was as real as anything else. I live in Royal Kunia apartment complexes and there is no documentation on any violent or odd deaths in my complex but needless to say, It was one to remember. (By Chris) I have had many 'choking ghost' experiences in Hawaii and one in Arizona. I frequent Hanalei Kauai and I used to live on Oahu as I attended UH Manoa from 2000-2002. I visited Kauai many times as a child and stayed at a house my parents own on Hanalei Bay. My house was (and I say 'was' because we knocked it down because it was 60yrs. old, termite infested and practically falling over) very haunted to say the least and at times I had some 'dream' experiences of waking up and seeing figures next to my bed. I always felt that spirits were warning me and sending messages to me to keep my distance from the islands and never to live here.... Well I obviously didn't listen and as I began my first year at UH, 2 weeks into the semester I went to my house on Kauai for the weekend. I had no major experiences then but I had obvious eerie feelings of some presence. I may add that I was by myself for the weekend. Upon returning to Oahu, by Wednesday I had come down with a very bad ailment in my gut. I went to the ER and they said I had bacteria in my intestine. They treated it with antibiotics. To this day, I still have stomach problems coupled with anxiety that also came with my original illness. I have had every test in the book done but no doctor can find anything wrong with me. My symptoms are so peculiar. Well I just got back from a 3-week trip to Hanalei on Jan. 9th 2004. I had 3 major experiences, 2 'choking' experiences and one when I refused to go into the half-sleep state that is necessary for the choking/paralysis to begin. Each morning after these experiences I awoke with my stomach symptoms heightened, I would be exhausted as if my life force were drained. I felt like something had stolen part of my life force. My current acupuncturist who I think has helped me in my ailment more than any other doctor I have visited says that my motivation is low and this is the root of my problem. I feel like this could all be linked, this is not a new inquiry as even after the first week of my original illness in 2000, I hung ti leaves in my dorm room in Johnson Hall B in order to protect me from spirits. Being local and having heard many stories about the Hawaiian supernatural, I am wondering, have you heard many stories of people becoming sick after experiences with spirits? If so what do they do about it? I read the one story on your site about the 'weak-minded' father and son with certain health problems. I would say I could be classified as 'weak-minded' as I shy away from anger and such. Interestingly enough a haole friend of mine (I’m haole as well) got an unexplained sickness to his stomach after spending spring break in my house in Hanalei in 2001. He has very much the same personality as myself. I don't know what to make of it all, all I know is that I am tired of feeling exhausted and sick to my stomach. The only direction I have not pursued in my quest for healing is a spiritual one, I feel like I would need to return to Hawaii to do so. (By Daniel) Choking Ghost in Hanalei I lived in Hawaii for 18 years, and had numerous experiences with the supernatural, but two in particular stand out. 1. Choking ghosts. I've also heard them called “pressing ghosts”. I lived at 1535 Pensacola Street on two separate occasions, and in both apartments had the same experiences. I sleep on my stomach, and I would wake up with the feeling that something was sitting on my back, pressing my face into the pillow, trying to suffocate me. I learned early that getting mad was the best solution. When I got frightened, whatever it was would feed off of my fear. But when I got angry, I would forcefully say out loud, "STOP THAT", and the sensation would vanish immediately. I would also hear scratching noises inside the wall of the bedroom where this happened. 2. About 20 years ago, I lived in a modern house on University Avenue up near the UH. The living room was on the second floor in the front of the building, and had a picture window that overlooked the driveway and University Ave. There was a staircase from the driveway that went up the left side of the building to the front door which led into the living room. Late one night, around 1a.m., I was reading in the living room, sitting on the sofa in front of the picture window, waiting for my roommates to come home. I heard a car pull into our driveway, saw the lights of the car through the window, heard the engine turn off, saw the lights go off, heard people get out of the car and walk up the steps to the front door. I remember thinking, "Great, my roommates are home." The front door opened up, and there was NOBODY there. There was no car, no roommates, no nothing! No wind to blow open the locked door, either. It was a very still night. I remember thinking, "That's really strange...", and stood up to close the door. It slammed shut while I was easily 10 feet away from it. I said out loud, "Don't slam the door, Casper, you'll break the windows", and then went in my room to go to bed. There was an inside staircase from the garage to the first floor as well, and you'd hear footsteps on it from time to time with no one on them. And lastly, books in the living room used to fall off the shelves by themselves. We'd be having a party, and suddenly a book used to literally fallout from between other books and hit the floor a couple of feet away, with no one near it. (By Judy S.) Choking Ghost & the Haunted House When I was 19, I had my first, very terrifying encounter with a Choking Ghost. I shared an apartment on Hassinger Street in Makiki with a friend. I was sound asleep at 3 a.m. when I suddenly felt someone pounce on my back, pushing me down into the bed. I was so scared I tried to raise my head, but it was pushed down into the pillow. I tried to move, but it held me everywhere. I tried to scream but nothing came out. Suddenly in my left ear, I heard a loud, piercing, crazy scream, like an absolutely insane psychopathic scream which frightened me to the bone! I managed to raise my head a little and I could see around the room and I even thought to reach for the light switch above the bed, but my whole body seemed frozen. At that age, I was into religion and going to church, so in my mind I was just thinking "Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ!" Somehow, at that moment, the whole thing lifted and whatever it was just disappeared. I snapped on the light of course, all the lights, and woke up my roommate. I had several more encounters and other weird incidents happen throughout my life (I’m 41 now), but that one remains vivid. I had never heard of choking ghosts until years later when I read one of Glen Grant's books. (By Eric) Choking Ghost in Makiki EXPERIENCES OTHER Spirit Guides CHILDREN & SPIRITS TV GHOSTS BEHIND THE STORY HAUNTED PLACES Video Gallery I have had three experiences that are similar to what is the common description of "choking ghost". In a choking ghost experience, the person is in a semi-sleep state and feels a pressure pushing down on his/her chest, almost like someone is sitting on them. The victim cannot move and cannot breathe. At the last moment, the pressure is lifted and sometimes the story is that the victim sees a spirit over them. Two of my experiences happened in Wahiawa and the third happened in Waipio Gentry, all when I was in my teens or twenties, and all three happened in the early morning hours while it was still dark. I picked up a habit of sleeping totally under the covers of my bed as a child, because I was afraid of what might come out of my closet. I figured if I can't see it, it can't see me. I was awake in bed and get an uneasy feeling that someone or something is standing in the room looking at me. With my head under the covers, I cannot see. My breathing becomes shallow and my muscles rigid as fear slowly sinks in. I try to move my arms to pull off the sheet over my head, but I cannot move them. In fact, I cannot move my entire body. As panic sets in, I get this pain in my head like two pieces of metal are grinding together in my brain. In an act of desperation, I'm finally able to pull the sheet off myself and take in a deep breath. As I look around, there is no one there. As I'm just about to fall asleep, the whole scenario replays again often repeating 3 or 4 times before falling asleep again. All of that happened three times. I can't really say if this is a dream or not. I didn't have the pressure pushing down on me like a "choking ghost" encounter but the results are the same, shortness of breath and paralysis. Whether my fear was real, imaginary, or a dream, I do not know. But, I don't sleep with my head under the covers anymore. (By Wahiawaboy) My Choking Ghost Experience GOT A GHOSTSTORY?
