NIGHT MARCHERS

Pacific Palisades is a peaceful place to live. The winding road going up the mountain seems to separate the entire community from the rest of the world. And if you live on the outskirts of the area you’ll sometimes see a wild boar cruising through your yard. Our house is stationed in such a place, located on the edge of the mountain that looks down into the valley, and whether you look into the valley or at the view across the valley on the other end, you can guarantee there are spirits from ancient Hawaii times. One night, I suddenly woke up around 2 a.m. and something moved me to look out of the bedroom window that was at the head of my bed. When I looked out, across the valley coming down the mountain, I saw the night marchers. Although I couldn’t see what they looked like, I clearly saw a big group of people walking down the side of the valley like on a trail carrying fire torches. Being born and raised in Hawaii, you’re likely to hear stories of night marchers, and never did I ever think that I’d experience them, but I did. Because many stories of night marchers sounded very scary, I’m glad that my experience was from afar, making me feel safe; also, because I wasn’t blocking their way. It was certainly an awesome sight, and I felt lucky to have witnessed a part of Hawaiian history, before my very eyes. (By Anna)

Pacific Palisades' Night Marchers

One night when I was around 5 years old I was sleeping over my grandparent’s house in Waipahu. At the head of the bed there was a window that looked out to the side of the house, where I used to see a group of Hawaiian people walking from the front of the house, toward the back, passing that particular window along the way. I’d sit up to look out the window to look and wave, “Hi”, but my grandma would always tell me, “No look! Come here, lie down. Go sleep!” I’d tell her there’s people outside, but she would just tell me to never mind, and to go to sleep. I’d always listen to her, and somehow I knew that she was aware of “the people” that walk through their yard some nights, passing their bedroom window along the way. (By M)

Night Marchers at Grandma's House

Our Camping Experience

My boyfriend and I went camping one weekend, which was a great night because the sky was clear and there was a full moon out. We were talking stories with each other till late at night, around 2:30 a.m. and started hearing what sounded ceremonial-type drums, beating. The sounds were getting closer and closer to where we were camped. At first, we dismissed the idea, thinking it was kids playing around or something, until we looked in the direction the sounds were coming from and saw a white misty-looking cloud. It was moving along with the drumming sounds, passing near our camp and moving toward the hills, then started going up. By then, we were feeling really nervous and creepy, wondering if we were seeing what we were seeing. Then I recalled my kupuna telling us a story about the night marchers, that sometimes there's a cloud that shields them so no one could see them! We just at there frozen, not saying a word, until it disappearred in the hills. When it disappeared, even the drummings stopped. When morning broke, we packed everything up and went home! In 2005 while training in the Kahuku Mountains, we made camp way back in the mountains on this trail leading down into an extremely deep gulch. Note that 2 members of our platoon are local born and raised and did not sleep anywhere near the trail, rather they chose to set up hoochs on the hillside. Around 1:00 a.m. on a half moon night, I woke up for guard duty, so I jumped up, lit a smoke, threw a dip in, and started monitoring the radio. After about 15 minutes I was specifically sitting on an ice chest, looking down spitting out the dip when the wind which had not been blowing all night, had picked up in a crazy gust. When I looked up standing to my right, there was a dark figure that to this day I cannot describe because it wasn’t there but it was there whatever the hell that suppose to mean. The figure raised its arm/hand to swing at me and I just rolled to the left to avoid getting hit. When I got back on my feet, there was nobody there, the wind had stopped, and I had woken everyone up. I got cussed out by everyone but the two local guys told me to sleep off the trail, which I did. Note, the ice chest was exactly in the middle of the trail and everyone else had a bad sleep for the rest of the night, except for me and the local guys who slept on the side of the hill. (By Joe)

Kahuku Night Marchers

However, I can relate an experience that happened to me in the 5th grade. Anyway, it was raining really hard and the guy I was sharing a tent with snored really loud, and smelled really bad, or something because I could not sleep. So I crawled outside in the rain, sat under one of the stone park tables with a piece of tarp to keep me from getting soaked, when back towards the park, across the highway from the beach where we were camped, I saw lights. It wasn’t just one or two, but dozens of them, flickering like tiki torches that was about a football field away, all in a squiggly row, coming down from the mountainside, slowly. They got to level with the road passed through the trees in the park ... crossed the road ... and proceeded away from me up the beach to the north, but I could never make out the shadows of people. I never heard voices, nor did the dozens of flames flicker from the rain. It's like they were ghost marchers. (By Jim)

Must be Night Marchers

I have a friend who lives up Papakolea. In the back of their house there is a path leading away from the house and into the bushes and stuff. One night I went over his house to hang out and have a few beers with him. As we were in the back of the house we could hear strange noises and the wind seemed to be picking up right near where we were. All of a sudden that path or trail became like a path of fire from a lot of fiery “footsteps” running on the path, and the bushes on the sides of the trail started moving as if there really was a group of people passing through on the trail. That was my first paranormal experience. For my friend from Papakolea, he was used to it, saying it happens all the time. (By D.)

A Fiery Trail

Whitmore is an old pineapple plantation camp and it is said that on certain nights the Night marchers march through Whitmore on their way to the Birthing Stones. There is basically one main road that travels from the Navy base through Whitmore out to Kamehameha Hwy. On the other side of Kamehameha Highway are the birthing stones, and on the nights the Night marchers march through Whitmore, you can hear the dogs barking starting at one end of the village, slowly working its way down to the other end. Then after awhile, the barking starts again but in reverse order. (By Wahiawaboy)

Whitmore Village

Cursed

A few years ago, I heard a particular night would be the night of the "Night Marchers”. I mentioned this to friends and we were all excited to see this phenomenon. That night we drove all over the north shore; all the way to Kaena Point, (which we hiked into). But no night marchers or any ghosts. Until I drove up a side road that ran along Foodland on the North shore, (don't know the name). At first, I drove past the heiau, into residential areas, then turned around. While driving down the side of the mountain, I saw the sign for a heiau. It was dark and very creepy, and after driving in a few feet, I had a strong feeling that I should stop and turn around. I had the strong feeling that someone was watching with strong disapproval… with malice. There were a total of 6 or 8 people in my station wagon and two were haoles, while the rest had experiences with me when I tell of uugie feelings. So they stayed in the car. The two haoles walked to the heiau, because I refused to drive any further. In fact, I wanted to leave, but waited. Only about two, or three years later, my husband couldn't keep his job because the union carpenters were not as prosperous as years before, the economy. We had to move to Connecticut, (his home), and leave my beloved homeland. I found out one of the other haoles went through divorce, while the other got HIV. Before I left Hawaii, I bought the second edition of Rick Carroll’s “Spooky Stories”. He describes the exact heiau I went to, called “Watched”. He also experienced being watched. I truly felt this as a warning to me. Before I left for the mainland, I also went to the birthing stones to ask forgiveness, for bringing those haoles to that sacred site. I did not know that particular heiau was so bloody and powerful and that haoles had been sacrificed there. I lived in Wahiawa for many years and never gave the birthing stones a second thought, until I went. I could not stop crying because there was death everywhere!!! There was a woman crying over her baby, he was stillborn. I could not stop crying. I felt many more losses, like mothers dying in childbirth, babies with birthmarks. The pain and the sorrow!!!!!!! My friend didn't understand, and he was this Hawaiian guy who thought the birthing stones were a place of birth and joy, and so did I. The following morning my husband, who had been out of work for nine months, got a call to work, temps but better than nothing, from the company that said it had no room for nobody. Three days or so later, we moved to the mainland. I truly feel my apology was well taken because we now have a home of our own. Maybe not in Hawaii, but soon. (Love and mahalo’s, Darrell)

I suppose you can call these people "night marchers" being they are Hawaiian spirits and were 'marching' at night. What happened was around 2 or 3 something in the morning one night, I woke up because I could hear alot of people making noise. And I mean a LOT of people, like there was some big gathering or something nearby. My bed is right by the window that looks out on the road in this townhouse area I live. So I sat up to look out the window, thinking what the heck is going on this time of night, and how can these people be so inconsiderate making so much noise. Man was I surprised. When I looked out the window, I was stunned to see a large group of Hawaiian people from ancient times all walking in procession down the road passing through the townhomes, talking and laughing, and looking quite happy! I didn't know how I know, maybe I don't, but it felt like they were all going to some big gathering, but where, was beyond me. The group also looked illuminated with a little bit of goldish light, like a light goldish color. What an experience. (By E.S.)

A Happy Procession

The summer of 2009 I rented a room in a house in Kailua Kona on the Big Island. One night I felt my bed shaking and a figurine on my dresser fell to the ground and shattered. I assumed this was an earthquake, but then I experienced the overwhelming sense that I was not alone. The next day I spoke with my landlord who lived above me, she experienced no shaking and informed me that the house was built on the original trail of the night marchers. I assume that this was my encounter with a night marcher. I spoke with a psychic from Oahu some months later about the experience. She told me she believed he thought I was a goddess given to him from Pele and that he meant me no harm. (By PJ)
