One strikes me as the most powerful. Back 25 or so years ago, you could drive all the way to the Iao Needle Point’s parking lot at night. It was said that you could hear the recreation of the “Battle of Iao” on a no-moon night at a certain time of night. My mom and I were believers but never really mustered up the courage to go check this out until one weekend. It so happened to be a no-moon night and my Uncle John was free for doing anything. We packed up the car with blankets, flashlights and went up the valley. Once up there we got out of the car and just strolled around the parking lot with our flashlights on. We waited but there was nothing, nothing at all, just the sound of the river splashing nearby. An hour must’ve went by and we were thinking of giving up and going home when we decided to try and go way up the path and turning off our lights. This is when it all happened! We were at this rope bridge and started to separate. Mom was on one part of the trail, I was by the bridge, and Uncle John was on the bridge. It slowly started to build-up. First Uncle John came up to me and asked how long I was standing there. It was pitch black. You couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. I told him that I was there all that time of 45 minutes or so. He said someone was standing right next to him on the bridge and he thought it was me. He could feel the footsteps and the leaning on the bridge and everything. We went to find mom and then we started to hear everything slowly start-up. The drum pounding, sticks hitting sticks, grunting, and fighting noises! We found mom who was leaning on a guardrail. We started to ask each other if we were hearing this when it really started to get loud. Screams, blood-curdling screams, and vibrations of large boulders rolling and crashing. The sticks hitting got louder, and it was as if we were right there, hundreds of years ago during “The Battle of Iao”! When we turned on our flashlights after what seemed like 2-3 hours, the noises all went away. But we definitely felt like we were being watched closely. We all jumped into our car quickly and sped off! Still, today, we shake our heads at each other. Did that really happen to us? We were, and still are, honored to have been able to experience this sacred experience. (By W.) Within the Battle of Iao Needle Within the Battle of Iao Needle My Experience at Work My Experience at Work I wanted to share another experience I have had. I was working as a line cook at a local restaurant in a mall here on Maui when I had a few experiences. From the strong smell of flowers late at night in only certain spots of the restaurant during closed hours when it was empty. Then one morning I was prepping in the kitchen before opening time. All by myself, except for the lone manager who was outside receiving deliveries. I was prepping at a double-sink and did hear from some senior employees before this that there was some weird things going on around this restaurant. I stood there and watched both sinks go on full blast! I hurried up the prep so fast, even skipping a few things so I could leave. Later in my time there (3 years) I was taking out the trash late at night, as I had done many times before. I would load up this cart with all the bags of trash, about as tall as I am. Then push this cart down this underground walkway to the end where the dumpster was. One night, I was going down the walkway when I noticed a local-looking guy walking down the path towards me, I told him to watch out and step aside as I continued to push the cart. As a few minutes passed and I was still pushing, I looked around because this area had no exits along the walls. He was gone! I can distinctly remember how he looked. A big-built Hawaiian man of about 30 years of age or so, and because of the cart's height, I could only see that he didn't have a shirt on and had some kind of tattoos and necklaces. While doing a little research later, I found out that it was rumored that the mall was built on a grave area (which was "professionally" moved) and that the stores and restaurants all had their share of "incidents". Oh, I ran out after that, but returned to work the next day as I felt this wasn't a mean spirit. (Mahalo's, W.) Lahainaluna High School Lahainaluna High School I grew up in Lahaina and went to Lahainaluna High School some years ago. I was a “day” student, as we also had and still have boarders too. That school is a hot spot for spirits. Boarders would tell me with all seriousness that warriors would be seen walking the halls at night, marching through the campus, and even calling each other with the conch shell. I used to go up to the school after hours to sell food to some of the boarder’s upper classmen. I would see shadows walk right in front of my car at night. Noises in the bushes, like walking close to me, and movements on the path ways. Needless to say, I would conduct my business and get out quickly! I KAIKA LUNAS! Alive and Passed! (Anonymous) Some years ago living in Paukukalo, I lived in this well-known haunted house. I didn't know it was "haunted" at the time. It wasn't very long after being settled in I was home alone washing dishes on a school day when a Hawaiian boy around 7 or 8 years old peeked out from behind my bedroom door and in Hawaiian spoke, "Come play with me." At first instant I thought it was one of my neighbors kids for we lived across from Hawaiian Homes and was looking to play with my boys, and I was surprised he spoke Hawaiian but given that time space "olelo Hawaiian" was the movement then. I told him my boys were in school and to come back after school and how he got in my bedroom with out me seeing. Now check this out! He tucks his head back into the room reappears on the other side of the house, by my boys room. My hair immediately stands up behind my neck and a crawlly feeling up my right arm. I dashed out of the house to catch my breath, a little stunned, scared and started to laugh about my experience! Later Papa Ka'alakea comes and tells me about what I saw. There were many experiences in that house. I moved out after about 2 years. (By Mele) In Haiku, for reasons that I had to seek my aunt who is kupuna in our "gift" went back to the Big Island for her advice. She told me, "I am sending you back with your grandma and grandpa's cape (this was for my protection) you will know when they are with you. It will rain and you will NOT get wet. It poured that day they were with me! Not a single drop. God's truth! This effect happens ALL the time sometimes without you knowing but they will let you know somehow. And the Hawaiian boy was not smoky or transparent...he looked and sounds real like how I look at my children. (By Mele) Haiku Haiku Paukukalo Paukukalo My wife and I went on vacation to Maui, where I have some family there. Well to make long story short, my great grandmother had passed away ten years and two days before hand. So in honor of her and our aumakua I went along the Kapalua highway to where me and my uncle erected an ahu to leave offerings and the like, After saying a quick prayer to the akua and kupuna alike we found our ahu and left leis and fruit. On our way back I noticed some mahilini (tourists) Building ahu because (as I over heard them say) "It looks so cool." Pissed off I told them that what they did was not pono and that they should leave now before they pissed off the Uhane. We got into our car and headed North to Hana. About three hours passed, we left my uncle’s house, and on the way back the same couple and their car were sitting on the side of the road. I pulled over and asked if they had called for a tow and they had mentioned their phones had no signal...mine was at full signal strength. I tried calling and the battery died. I looked at their car and noticed about a soccer ball sized dent in the right quarter panel...they said there was a rockslide...which isnt uncommon for that area. They did mention that when they got out of their car there was a person standing on the top of the hillside looking down at them he was in a malo and nothing else when they called him he walked away from them to the other side of the cliff where they could no longer see. (By Kaimi) Tourist on Maui Tourist on Maui The last time I was on Maui, I was watching the sunset with a group of people from the resort. As the sun was going down, I heard the most beautiful music. I turned around and asked people where it was coming from. No one else heard it. Since then, I have learned that this experience means that Hawai'i has made a spiritual link with you. And I believe it.
