KAUAIKauai A Voice from the Past My wife and I were at the graveyard across the street from the ocean on the island of Kauai, at Kaleea just past Kapaa. We were looking for her grandfather’s grave. It was late in the day, about sunset. We met the curator and he looked up the name and said that her relative had been buried too long ago, that he'd have to send to Oahu for the records. As we were walking down the three sets of stairs, I heard a voice say my name. It was the second set of stairs which accessed one of the many terraces of this graveyard which had thousands of graves. I walked over past gravestone, after gravestone to a bare spot which had dark green grass. I got on my knees and spread the grass and there was a sunken grave plate with her grandfather's name on it. (By Peter) The Stone Wall I heard this story from my father when I was a little kid. Someone on the island of Kauai was building a rock wall. One day while down at a creek, he found a perfect rock for his wall. He had the rock placed in the wall. The man's daughter was just beginning to sleep in her own room. Every night she cried. The parents figured that she had to learn to sleep alone and let her go. After several nights of crying, the father finally went into the daughter's room and asked her why she was crying. She tearfully explained that she was afraid of the woman who sat on the wall every night. The man looked out the window and he saw a ghostly figure sitting on the wall on top of the rock he found in the creek. The next day, he removed the rock and returned it to the exact spot in the creek where he had found it. The woman never returned. Hawaiian spirits are known to inhabit stones. It is said that illness, misfortune, and even death can follow a person who disturbs or takes home stones that are inhabited by a spirit. This may explain why I've heard that every year a lot of lava rocks are mailed back to Volcanoes National Park. Lava rock is said to be inhabited by Pele, the goddess of fire. (By Wahiawaboy) Kokee State Park One night me and my boyfriend decided to camp at Kokee State Park. So we found a spot under a big tree where there was also a green picnic table. We decided to sleep under the stars next to the picnic table. Throughout the night I kept waking up. It felt like someone was watching us sleep. I looked at the picnic table and there was a figure sitting down. I thought I was hallucinating and just went back to sleep. The next morning I asked my other half if he saw someone sitting on the picnic table last night. And he said, "I thought it was you."
