Ghost Hunting - 3

I wasn't expecting what I saw when I took a trip on a warm windy day out to Waialua last week. For years I had heard tales about what is called by local people, Obake Church, and had wanted to visit it if only just to get a glimpse at a place considered to be one of the most terrifying areas here in Hawaii. And now as I got out of the car I was going to get a chance to see it in person and draw my own conclusions. I try not to sound like a paranormal investigator when I say that, seeing as my particular line of work is not intended to be meshed in with other modern day approaches that involve scientifically based data findings, measurements and so on. For someone like me paranormal exploration is just that, like an archeologist looking for clues to a world not readily seen but usually felt on many different levels. I'm exploring a place where ghosts are for the most part known to be found. How that is defined is an ongoing scenario for me. Being an eye witness to the unknown is one of the many things that makes being a part of this field of exploration unique in its own way, and the power of observation above all else is my rock I hold onto firmly when something spooky is going on. I'm also a traveler visiting, even if only for a short time, another world that is only a few steps into the shadows from our very own. As I stood in front of this huge stone structure abandoned long ago I felt like another world was waiting amongst the ruins to be revealed to any who dared come here in the middle of the night. Unfortunately that was next to impossible seeing that it is gated off in the late afternoon. With that said I took my chances and hoped that at least something extraordinary would occur even if I didn't see it or hear it. If I was lucky something on my camera or DVR would show me what I had come here to get a peek at under a noon day sun. Then again Glen Grant wrote a story about a young girl's encounter she had here in the middle of the day that ended with her horse being scared out of its wits, so anything was possible after all this was Obake church and named so for such terrifying encounters. Jen (my girlfriend) seemed to be drawn in immediately and she got to the old stone ruins before I did, but as I walked toward it a mixture of awe and the sense that I was not alone grew stronger with each passing step I took toward this imposing monolithic structure. My DVR was recording this all for prosperity and as I got closer and closer the wind picked up and whipped hard around me and in that moment, I should have known that this was where I was going to be given what I had come here to find. The currents felt almost alive in a way and also filled with its own intentions as it seemed to push me forward like a giant invisible hand toying with me. As the day progressed we had a few interesting scenarios like when Jen told me she heard what sounded like people speaking with Irish accents while we explored the old crumbling entry way and then later discovering that there were people from Ireland that helped build the church back in the days when Hawaii was still a beautiful dream for many around the world to come to but because it was so far away that is all it could ever be. Obake Church itself felt like parts of it slept during the long lazy days here in the islands while other parts were awake eager to see who would come here and why. Perhaps there were a few spirits from another country curious as to what our intentions were while walking around trying to get a feel for the entire area in question. ike

The graveyard nearby was an enticing lure so we went there next. With its mixture of many religious as well as ethnic styles of resting places placed here and there I felt compelled to take it all in as much as possible seeing that we were only going to be there for a short while. At one point while walking thru there we all got this feeling like there was a barrier placed in front of us that was made not only of ghostly energy but purest emotions. It felt like whoever was watching us was agitated over an ongoing situation that none of us were privy to, until Jen discovered on top of, and next to a large haka (Asian tombstone) two big metal dog dishes, as well as a few vases knocked over holding old flowers, from visitors that had not been there in a very long time. When she removed the feeding bowls and fixed the vases back to an upright position at its base the feeling seemed to dissipate and get carried away by that eerie wind. Like I said our visit had its moments but the most startling thing of all is what I discovered on my first recording out there that day. There were 2 unsettling EVPs both of which was able to give me my own conclusions about the old church, nestled away from the rest of the island down that long lonely road somewhere in Waialua. The home to such scary places like the “Inugami Temple” (Japanese for dog demon). Upon the winds of that daylight vigil was another paranormal mystery of Oahu speaking to me. The first occurred when it had picked up while walking towards what I will call the two towers out front of the church. Ghosts are sometimes known to use any type of ambient sound to be heard including the wind. On a ghost tour I was asked to be a part of a few years ago such a voice was picked up on the powerful winds of the old Pali lookout, and here again was another example of how they can manipulate the roaring sounds of such an element to speak to the living. On this particular recording I got what sounded like someone barely human whispering and building it's voice amongst that creepy bursts of air whirling around me…Jennifer says that the first sounds seem to be saying as they were being formed.."I’m screaming...waiting." After that there is a long pause then you can pretty much hear this..."I came out screaming". Who said that and why I don’t even want to take a guess at. The second recording was done while we all stood together in the graveyard and I had expressed how it would be a good idea in returning here at night, and immediately following that was another scary sounding voice saying.."It might" or "At night". Either way whether these were words of caution or an actual invitation given after hearing that first recording, I am more than certain I will not be taken that spirit up on that offer to return after sundown, and if it was a warning then I can take it to heart. Only one outcome comes to mind for myself should I have been foolish enough to have accepted that possible offer. If something were to happen at Obake Church while visiting there late at night I can only try to keep those ideas at bay. Hearing a slight movement and then seeing much to late an unearthly looking denizen beyond my wildest nightmares gliding quietly over the old tombstones towards me or from the twisted looking shadows of that church which by the way burned down many years ago, then perhaps it would be me who would be running down that long lonely cane field road screaming. A chance I am not willing to ever look into. (By Phil, the "Obake Hunter")

Do you believe in them? A lot of you do I suppose, if not why read this right? I'm a believer, myself, and after working in the field with Hawaii's ghosts even more so. Each person, I am convinced, has a personal catalyst that triggers this wonderful belief system. Whether it's a story shared with you by your aunty or uncle or maybe even your tutu or tutu kane or a firsthand account when the unknown paid you a personal visit people believe and rightfully so. Now if you don't that's fine maybe you're just intrigued as to why people do and if so then you are living in times when information is readily available online and thru books at your local bookstores, etc. Last night I had another uncanny pair of encounters that took place just as the greatest night of the year, for the often silent kingdom of the dead, began to open its eerie gates. With that said let me briefly share with you another night in my world where the ordinary is often times more than that. Kaimuki is known for its ghosts and perhaps the most famous one has to do with what some locals here call "The Evil House" personally I had someone show this to me as we went up to another haunted location for the evening but to protect both the integrity as well as the occupants privacy the information for that location will not be posted here for public viewing. As we slowly drove past it I started to feel the heebie jeebies but that's good because maybe that was my own catalyst to get me much more focused for the night ahead. Eventually we arrived at the location we had come to visit and this I can and will share with you all. 16th avenue bridge is a lonely looking place late at night and even the freeway below it looked scarce with only the occasional few cars passing below adding on to the ambience overall. The story goes that a young girl died in a tragic head on accident with a car while crossing the street there and ever since on certain nights her ghost can still be seen roaming the area. The people who had joined me for this brief outing got out of the car and as a slight cold breeze ran thru us I waited while, my girlfriend, a gifted sensitive tuned in to her surroundings. Eventually she spoke and told us there was a spirit of a young child guiding her to the crosswalk a few feet away from us.While this is going on my friends and I are taking a few photos even running an EVP session to help authenticate Jen's ghostly intuitiveness. Suddenly though it dawned on me...Why not bring out my EMF reader? For those who want to know what that is an EMF reader is used to find the x on the map for where a ghost might be located. Spirits seem to give off their own energy signatures and the EMF meter is able to measure electro-magnetic fields that hopefully in the process are able to detect your ghost if one is around.I went back to the car and got out my EMF and went over to where Jen was standing. She was smiling and telling me that this was indeed the little girl who had died here and she had chosen this spot to talk with us. I turned the EMF on and almost immediately it began to spike. The one I use has a flashing light that increases as the meter climbs its scales showing how strong the energy is. To be very fair I checked out a power pole that was several feet away and tested it and sure enough it had its own reading. When I was walking over to Jen the meter went quiet but as soon as I put it in front of her where the girl was supposed to be standing it lit up and began beeping rapidly and flashing just as quickly. I started to talk to the spirit that Jen said was there and at first I was told she wouldn't speak to me or anyone else seeing as she was told never to talk to strangers."Good I'm glad you don't" I said and then Jen tells me if we introduce ourselves she would talk. Naturally I introduced the group present who by now are quite curious as to what the heck was going on. After a bit I began to gently question this wonderful ghost who was in our midst."Jen does she know she has passed on?""Yes"Does she know she is a ghost now?""Yes, she does know"Then why is she still here?""She wants to speak with her mommy""Doesn't she know where her mommy lives?""No, she doesn't remember much after the accident happened. She waits here hoping her mommy will show up""Is she here all the time?""Yes but she sleeps during the day""Sleep?""Yes, that's the best way she can describe it"The conversation goes on like that for awhile but here's the thing. Everytime we mentioned this girl's mom the EMF meter starts to flash faster and go up on the meter hitting a 4 on mine which is extremely high."She likes the toy you have, she says the lights are neat and Christmassy looking.""Tell her thank you and I'm glad she does" So there we are talking to this ghost who is quite sweet and polite, a far cry from some of the more spooky types we encounter at different locations. Eventually I tell the little girl don't you think it's a good idea to go and wait somewhere else for your mom? I mention if she sees a white beautiful light nearby and if she does she should go there. The girl says she does but she is not sure who is there and what will happen if she goes. Suddenly I blurt out that she should call out to her grandma and grandpa and they will keep her company till her mommy joins them. Better to be there then here waiting at some lonely bridge I add. She tells us she will try that and after a few minutes she turns back to Jen and she says..."You can turn that off now I'm going to go see them"And the second Jen says this, my EMF meter goes dead!"Where's the girl Jen?""She left she told you to turn that thing off now because you don't need it anymore."Another slight end of October breeze passing thru Kaimuki went thru me as well and I am baffled...I moved the meter around and it remained quiet. In today's world of paranormal research studies and investigations we all have our moments when what we search for comes willingly to us. Granted it is like flipping a coin because it can be good or bad but when it is good when it is as heartfelt and sincere like the story of this little girl you don't mind facing the bad. It has always been my mission statement to find these spirits told in stories here in these incredibly diverse and haunted islands and if anything, to help verify them and thus placing a spiritual lei around the portraits of each and everyone's tale told. One that is made out of purest love, adoration and respect. That's what I do and I am as far away from being a "ghost hunter" because of it then you can possibly imagine. Later on that evening as Halloween had set into its first hour we moved on to old Pali drive to experience perhaps another level of chicken skin. While there I played an old Hawaiian chant to bless people and as soon as the recording stopped playing from up those ancient dark and beautiful mountains came the sound of what I thought to be a conch shell playing a long and wondrous soft note that went on for about a minute or so and then stopped. Before we left we were also blessed to have heard a single drum beat like that from a pahu around us. Do you believe in ghosts? I guess I not only believe in them but to close these stories in a proper fashion I would like to say.... Do they believe in us and our intentions?Happy Halloween my friends....
