Ghost Hunting - 2

One evening (during our summer break from high school in 1975) my friends decided to check out Morgan's Corner to go 'Ghost hunting'. It is not the Nuuanu one, but the one next the Pali Golf Course. It was kinda late (about 11:30pm) when we came down the Pali and turned left into the road that led to Morgan's Corner. We were cruising with 2 cars: one was a souped up '69 Camaro that was driven by a friend of ours named Craig. He had his friend sitting in the front passenger seat, and two girls were sitting in the back. The other car, a “souped up” '67 Chevelle Malibu was driven by my friend Geoff. I was sitting in the front passenger seat, and we had three girls sitting in the back. We were cruising the dark road when about midway we came to this area (on our left) where there was a fairly large area where you could turn your car around. As we passed this area, Craig and Geoff slowed down and everyone noticed that the area was dimly lit by the moonlight. Then we all saw it. An old car was parked there. It was light blue and it appeared to be an old 1960's Valiant. The dome light was on and it gave an eerie dim yellowish glow. There were three men sitting in the car...a driver, front seat passenger, and a back seat passenger seated directly behind the driver. They were all wearing what appeared to be U.S. sailor uniforms. At this point our two cars were driving really slow. As we passed behind them, we noticed that not one of the sailors moved a muscle...they all just stared straight ahead. We finally passed them, continued into the darkness of the road and lost sight of them. Only a few seconds passed when one of the girls asked, "Didn’t you guys think that was weird?" With that my friend Geoff yelled "Yeah!" and signaled for Craig to stop. Geoff pulled over next to him and yelled, "Let's go back and check it out!" So Craig put his car in reverse and quickly reversed his car back to that area. Geoff was also reversing and was not far behind Craig. The blue Valiant and its occupants were gone! Both Craig and Geoff quickly turned their hotrods around and began wildly racing back towards the direction of the entrance thinking that they would easily catch that car. We finally reached the entrance and you know what? That old beat up blue Valiant (and its three occupants)were gone. All of us knew that no way could that Valiant outrace both of our souped up cars! And no way could that beat up old Valiant handle those turns at Morgan's Corner! Everyone agreed on what we saw and the events that unfolded. But none of us had any explanation for it. (By GeeBee)

The Chase at Morgan's Corner

My friend Richard was a strange character. He has on occasion exhibited a 6th sense or ESP which I personally witnessed, and I know that he has conducted a few séances. One evening, some friends and I went over to Richard's house to play cards and talk stories. (His house was located near the Kaimuki Stream Bridge and Date St.) After a while, Richard suggested that we go to the Japanese graveyard located near Kaimuki High School. I guess out of curiosity all of us agreed to go. *I strongly recommend that whoever is reading this... DO NOT do what we did that night! Unfortunately, this event occurred a few years before my father warned me "not to disrespect anything on this island". Shortly after arriving at the graveyard, Richard selected a certain headstone and instructed us to sit around it. It just so happens that Richard and I were the only ones sitting on part of the structure below the headstone. Richard produced 2 boxes of wooden stick matches, and he arranged them in some type of symbol (on the area where he and I were sitting). He made the heads of the matches touch each other. Then he began to chant in Japanese and started to light all of the matches. All of us were intrigued to say the least. After Richard finished, he told us to be quiet and wait. "What we stay waiting for?" someone asked. "Shhh!" replied Richard. We waited for 30 minutes and nothing happened. Then Richard said, "Hmmm, I guess it's not going show itself". My friends and I grumbled that this was a waste of our time, and we all decided to go back to Richard's house. It was about 12:30 a.m. when everyone decided to go home. I lived on Young St. behind King's Bakery, so I walked straight down Date St. Just as I began crossing Isenberg St., I began hearing lots of cats meowing and making strange noises. As I reached the other side, I saw about 10 to 15 cats running from this wooden apartment complex. I was really freaked out because they just came out of nowhere. I looked behind me and noticed one cat dart across the street. It ducked under this hibiscus hedge right behind me. At this point I was walking a little faster now and still looking at the hedge. The cat emerged from the hedge and was on the sidewalk about 15 feet behind me. It was crawling low to the ground like it was stalking me and getting ready to jump. It was moving fast. At 5 feet away I got a really good look at it in the street light. It was a big sized cat with a dark grayish color, and a vertical white stripe on its forehead that ended at the top of its nose. This is where it gets really weird. Something was wrong with its face. It didn't have the typical features of a cat. I mean its eyes and nose looked human. It was like looking at a person's face. I started running. I looked back to see what it was doing and it was chasing me! I put on the after burners that were fueled by fear and I hauled 'you know what!' I did not look back nor did I stop until I reached home. I noticed that all the while I was running home, it felt like I was carrying some kind of weight on my shoulders. And as soon as I reached the door of my home, the sensation immediately disappeared. The next day I called Richard to tell him what happened. He said, "I hope it didn't touch you!" I told him that it did not and he sounded genuinely relieved. Then he explained that the thing I saw is called an "Obake Neko" or ghost cat. Richard told me that he had called on this thing twice before and it had showed itself both times. He said that on the previous night at the graveyard, this thing was supposed to show itself, walk around us a couple of times then disappear right before our very eyes. Richard told me that if this thing had touched me, I would have gotten sick or worse! He also said that the weight I felt on my shoulders (while I was running) was a spirit, and it released me when I reached a safe haven (my home). I was really mad at this point, and Richard profusely apologized saying that he didn't mean for it to single me out. He said that it probably did because I was sitting on the grave! To this day I still can't believe what I experienced that night. I will never forget the face of that thing! (By GeeBee)

Obake Neko

The Chase at Morgan's Corner

Obake Neko

The afterlife...the final mystery for us all and as the clock ticks away here and I once again get ready for another encounter with a world that already holds all the answers for that final question. I am reflecting upon how many answers lay just out of our grasp at Kapaa Quarry road where I am off to later tonight. Over the years this old road that has no street lights has been the scene for several fatal car wrecks one of them is a story that has become almost legendary. It involves what should have been one of the happiest days of a person's life as a bride and groom are going to the chapel along with a priest who is more then likely going to give them their wedding vows. I guess they saw Kapaa quarry road as a short cut to their destination. Sadly, though it was the last place they may have had such warm and loving expectations while still being part of our mortal realm. All three perished in the car they were in at Kapaa on that sad and tragic day and it is said that if you are driving along that coffin dark road at around 3 a.m. you may see all three of them walking around at that hour known as dead time. And if you think that was bad enough seeing such a ghostly trio walking silently along the roadside, remember this...that they will reappear somewhere ahead of you one more time while your panic laced thoughts are probably already telling you to just get away from there. Imagine the lonely terror of being that driver learning to late that you are on one of modern day Oahu's most haunted roadways. From what I am told as well the police department does not like that place either as there have been accounts of them doing their job of filling out a report somewhere along that ghost filled route only to discover an unwanted visitor with them that disappears as suddenly as they showed up, staying long enough though to scare the living daylights out of them. Still my hats off to those brave men and women because a lot of times HPD faces trying conditions just to keep us safe and once in awhile it involves things that we cannot explain. One final note before I go and prepare as already I can feel the power of Kapaa even from my safe little place in town. Because I have been there before you see...and I have walked that route where the sounds of total abandonment slowly transforms into an experience that will take what you know as being sane and try to turn it inside out. Best to stay away when such things happen. Happy Halloween Hawaii as smiling pumpkins and people in costumes are going to be everywhere soon, and yet what really is out there may be walking along right beside you or someone you know and no one would even realize it.... Screams at Manoa Graveyard

Screams at Manoa Graveyard

Back in the late 70's when my friends and I were into ghost hunting, we decided one night to go to the Manoa Graveyard and check out a supposedly 'haunted tree'. That night there was Geoff, Eric, myself and two girls. Geoff, Eric, and the two girls went into the graveyard to try and locate the tree. I was asked to watch the car, so I sat on a bench just inside of the graveyard. They finally located the tree. And they were standing about 30 feet from it. That's when one of the girls let out a scream and started running back towards the car. Everybody else freaked and started running too. They were running through the graveyard in order to reach the paved road that led out to where I was. Well, as soon as I heard the scream, I stood up to see what was happening. I saw one of the girls come running out with Geoff following closely behind. Then I caught sight of Eric running when suddenly he just disappeared. Just then I saw the last person running...the other girl. I swear that this is what happened next. I see this thing pop out of the ground, right in front of the girl that was running, and it was facing her. I could see only a head and shoulders. From a full sprint she stopped dead in her tracks (pardon the pun) and let out the loudest bloodcurdling scream that I've ever heard. With that she fell on her butt frozen with fear. The thing that came out of the ground was Eric who had fallen into an unfinished shallow grave about 4 feet deep. Geoff and I ran to help Eric and the girl. Eric had the wind knocked out of him, and the girl was shaken but okay. Geoff told everyone to quickly get in the car. Just as we began heading down East Manoa Road, we saw 3 police cars (with their light flashing) as they flew pass us on their way up to the graveyard. They were probably responding to the screams. According to one of the girls, she said that when she was looking at the tree, she saw a white figure (that looked like a lady) peeking at her from behind the tree...that's when she let out the scream and began running. Geoff validated that something paranormal had occurred by later telling me in private of what he saw. As they were walking towards the tree, Geoff said that he saw a dim yellow light in the canopy of the tree. However, one else saw it. Then he said as they stopped about 40 feet from the tree...the yellowish light disappeared and that's when the girl saw the apparition. (By Gee Bee)

Kawa Ceremony: A Lesson In Spiritual Atonement

When someone makes a spirit or in this particular case spirits angry whether intentionally or otherwise it can be an overwhelming experience to have to deal with and so it is not only our job as paranormal explorers to document the situation when asked to intervene but to also bring closure to these haunting problems. Such was the case last week when I got a phone call from a person I know asking if both me and my girlfriend who is a strong sensitive in her own right to come to a location where he has entertained people with stories about ghosts here in the islands. There has been problems in the past and they continued to surge because his partner was more and more stepping out of proper bounds to try and thrill the tourists and so on that would seek out their company to be told amazing tales of spooky happenings around the island of Oahu. My friend was no saint though as he himself felt the need to be a protector for the people he took to these sometimes very dark locales so he himself was warned many times not to engage in a strong and confrontational manner which was only amplifying the problems they were experiencing. I can only advise in these matters seeing as the only way out is for the individual to come to terms with the spiritual problem they have created and to connect with the solution they feel may help and in this case I was asked to go to document a kawa ceremony on a very cold and windy night at a place I will leave anonymous so the curiosity seekers out there will not be given the opportunity to intrude upon this sacred place. After we arrived a world sized dome of silence enveloped the area only letting in the huge bursts of wind and nothing else as we worked our way down to a particular location we felt had the most powerful mana to perform this simple ritual of showing respect to the powers that had been as riled as the stormy atmosphere we were experiencing. I let my girlfriend help a little and let the real task at hand be done by my rightfully so concerned friend who gently placed the ti leaf and koa bowl down and started to make the preparations adding the instructions that my girl friend's spirit guide had requested to help appease the ghosts that you could now feel were making their presence known. While this was being done the area began to feel like a courtroom were the now unseen jury had filed in and was intently observing the final testimony to the crimes that had been committed. One of the most highly regarded laws of their world involving respect had been broken after all and numerous times. The tops of old trees began to be tossed around soon after as if by angry hands and the temperature dropped significantly as the Kawa was being made. At any moment I thought I was going to see my breath issue forth past my almost chattering teeth looking like ghosts from some old Hollywood horror film unfurling in my flashlight's singular beam. The darkness began to blot out the environment around us closing in rapidly and when I heard the sound of a woman's voice giving off a loud unearthly sigh from right behind me, I jumped. Since I was the only one gauging our surroundings I encouraged the other two to finish up before the intensity building created some heart stopping situation. Judgment it seemed, was coming. Finally it was done and we all stood together in a somewhat huddled group and spoke in the best way possible with words from shaky hearts. Apologies that may hopefully in their sincerity and humble tones appease at least in some part what had transpired here for months on end. We drank our small portion of the Kawa as we were asked to do by the spirit guide present and soon after left. As we were doing so a voice in my head told me not to look back and so I obliged yet my mind's eye which is the most curious part to any of us began to picture these now much happier spirits of a bygone era sitting down to enjoy the gift my friend had brought them. As for the verdict? The jury, from what my girlfriend told me, were pleased. At least for now. (Submitted by, the “Obake Hunter”)

Rarely, do I return from a night of ghostly exploration and find both my soul and heart humming with vibrant energy but when it happens I need to sit down and try to let my mind and fingers race along to describe what that is like. Kahana Bay is one of those places and its picturesque valley and shoreline is a tranquil abode like her neighboring sea side sister Kaa'awa. If Heaven were to show us its beaches upon the peach colored sunset skies of Oahu I would like to think these two places may perhaps come fairly close to what it would look like. When we arrived at Kahana we took a few minutes to just enjoy its miniature forested coastline where country born chicks happily ran around peeping and looking for food with their proud parents watching over them. As a child I loved this place where my own parents would take us out here to go camping but at night it held me in a supernatural type of awe as a much more different side would seep into the atmosphere while I lay in my tent and watched shadows move easily outside like passing strangers. Returning much older now there was traces of those happier and scarier days of my youth but with age comes wisdom so I was thankful to be allowed to add new emotions that were much more positive to these memories. Eventually we struck out and headed down a nearbynearby road in search of a cemetery I had read about online. The evening was rapidly approaching as both me and my partner for this night of exploration looked upon old style houses with neatly looked after yards some small some huge with dogs eyeing us as we passed by. We never did find that graveyard but on my next trip out there I’m sure we will. In the process as we were looking around we came across a circle of very old looking rocks that were definitely placed here long ago judging by their spiritually inspired formations and there we stopped as the day got gently pulled over the mountain range and night came like the changing of the guard. Birds were singing right before this happened and these were not the ones you would hear in Honolulu. They carried a much more intense and melodic "end of day" song as they began to flit further and further up into the valley till finally they stopped and a deep quiet took hold. My senses were hungry for what I felt was out there and soon I was rewarded with what my thoughts had envisioned. At the beginning to a mountain trail you could feel a much older Hawaii come forth.... In my mind you could hear the nose flute playing and proud feet coming from their sacred refuge and gathering spots up in the mountains. By instinct I tried my best to capture some of these spiritual moments as my camera flashed and I asked questions on a warm Sunday evening but after awhile we literally had to pull ourselves practically unwilling from this source and move on down the road to Kahana Bay itself. As we were leaving we stopped to take some photos of lush darkened lots of land till we came to a chained off area and I felt this sense of urgency to witness more of old Hawaii's uhane perhaps emerging everywhere as the atmosphere was generating these impressions. Like a summer night's dream a revelation came forth to verify this. A heady fragrance of the past like the ones I used to encounter once again as a child when we visited places like Ulumau Village for school excursions came to me. It was that smell of Hawaii's first age for her people newly arrived from Tahiti and elsewhere. My feelings were rampantly overrun by that scent of old huts and tapa cloth overflowing with custom and culture that was heart breaking to me because now in this age of high tech dependence and status quo it was long gone and again there was this raw and needy feeling to take it all in. Energy coursed over me and gentle fingers of it ran over my face and head and I almost wanted to ask if it would be our companion for the rest of the night but that would have been wrong. This after all was something as free as our island trade winds and to make such a request for it to be harnessed would be going against our purpose for visiting this place. After about a minute or so it had moved on. We were left with an unspoken invitation to take our time and explore and we did just that returning once more to the place we had begun our journey and then to an old haunted bathroom were we were laughing because I felt almost disappointed that they had renovated the structure taking away it's spooky atmosphere....to a degree that is. At the end of the night while we waited to go back home a curious small group of young girls and a older Hawaiian woman approached us and asked why we were walking around taking so many pictures and so we told them. They all were like many of our island residents eager to share in the warnings of the spirits that roamed the area yet wanting to each tell their own tales. The younger women eventually went off to be with their boyfriends at a nearby camping area but the older woman sat with us and told us her own stories which we were happy to hear and record for our records. She only had time for a few but we were grateful for them as our visit to Kahana came to a peaceful close. I look forward to returning to this land of profound spiritual grace and paranormal enchantment and when we do come back I will return with a much younger heart even as time moves us forward yet I know at Kahana it will do so with much more loving hands.
