Richardson Swimming Pool, Pearl Harbor

Richardson Swimming Pool, Pearl Harbor

Back in 2001, at approximately 1 to 2:30 am. I experienced something I will never forget. As a Federal Police Officer on Patrol in the Arizona Memorial Visitors area, I discovered a vehicle parked just below the Richardson Swimming Pool. As I parked my Police vehicle in front of this vehicle, I ran the License Plates and walked around the vehicle checking for anything out of the ordinary. My search lights from my police vehicle illuminated the vehicle I was searching. Out of nowhere, I heard water splashing and people laughing! I looked up to where the entrance to the swimming pool was and I noticed that the gate was opened. I immediately called for backup, assuming the neighborhood kids from across the street had jumped the fence and were swimming in the pool. One unit staged himself on Kamehameha Highway in case the kids ran back across the street. As I walked up the stairs towards the opened gate and I heard very clearly the diving board springing into action as someone just jumped off of it. I entered the gate, saw the splash as the water was coming down.... and just like that... it got eerily quiet. No one was in the pool and the water was moving! I took a step back, took out my revolver wondering what the heck! I just couldn't believe what had happened just then! When my fellow officers arrived, the Major asked me, "What, did you see ghosts, too?" To be honest, I've heard so many stories in my life about ghosts but had never really believed it until it happened to me. I shared this with my family and even brought them all to the swimming pool the very next day. Speaking with my dad who was stationed in Pearl Harbor during WWII, he stated that the Swimming Pool was a staging area for the wounded and dead during the attack on Pearl Harbor. I just thought I'd share this. It was kind of weird because I don't recall being scared or anything, it was more like shocked, and disbelief of what had happened. From the very beginning, I should of noticed first thing that the gate was opened as I approached this vehicle. Even when I exited my vehicle, there was no sound or anything. And then just like that, the water splashing and people laughing. To see the water coming down and being stirred as if hundreds of people were swimming, is something so unreal, with a mixture of fear, fascination and a belief that perhaps, the dead still walk the face of the earth.... One time I was in the living room nighttime and happened to catch out of the corner of my eye, a shadow darting across the bedroom doorway going towards the bathroom. It was a little bit more than a simple movement to the point where I went to the bedroom to look but of course nothing I could see was there. Then last night I was playing my computer game and the screen suddenly went down so I tried to bring it back up so I can continue playing and it wouldn't go up and almost going haywire so I thought..."felt like someone wanted me to stop." What a trip, eh? And remember when I was in the bedroom trying to sleep I heard some noise in the living/dining room area which was odd enough to prompt me to get up and go check....again, nothing I could see was there. I'm wondering howcome all of a sudden all these odd things happening to me? Not that I mind. It doesn't really scare me so that's the main thing. (By J.H.)

All of a Sudden

A Daylight Encounter on Maui

A strange thing happened yesterday afternoon. I was playing tennis with my friend who had taught for hours and sat down on the court to take a break. I sat in a beach chair he had on the edge of the court. I kept hearing something behind me to my left. I glanced at least three times. At one point I saw something out of the corner of my eye, near the gate and hedge. He then commented that he thought he just saw something behind me. It obviously wasn't a person. I agreed and then joked it was my ghost. It was just bizarre. There was no human being there. It was daylight at the time and only a few feet away. (By Julie)

This happened around 6 p.m. one day right after work. My supervisor was outside putting things away and I was in the office locking up and before leaving the office I went to use the restroom. While I was in there, I heard someone on the other side of the wall that was the men's room. We have one of those motion paper towel detector where you wave your hand in front of it and the paper towel comes out and that is what I heard. So no big deal. I thought maybe my boss came in to use the restroom. I went outside and past the men's room on my way out. I was puzzled to find nobody inside. The paper towel had ejected and the lights was out. I went back to the front of the office and saw from the glass doors that my boss was still outside! Nobody else was in the office except me. I quickly gathered my things and left for home. That was the first time anything 'weird' happened. I don't know if that was a ghost that was in the men's room but I wasn't about to stick around and find out! (By Anonymous)

(This incident occurred in 1970, when I was living in Waimanalo.) My grandfather and grandmother lived in an old plantation house located very near to the old basketball gym in Waimanalo. Many years earlier, my grandmother had suffered a massive stroke which left her bed ridden, and she suffered greatly until she finally passed away in 1969. She died in that house. In 1970, mom and I moved in with my grandfather (in that same house) in order to assist him. I was 11 years old at this time. I had to stay in the room that my grandmother died in (my strong protests fell on deaf ears). After a few months living there, I began having terrible nightmares for 2 straight weeks. In the nightmare, my grandmother was chasing me and trying to grab my shoulders. It felt like she was desperately trying to tell me something. Just before she would catch me, I would suddenly wake up and sweating so much that I would be soaking wet. Every night for 2 weeks I would awaken that way. The last nightmare occurred on a Wednesday night, and the very next day on Thursday after school. After I finished all of my chores and homework, I plopped myself into the living room couch. I looked at the clock that was sitting on top of the TV and it was 5 p.m. My favorite TV show "Gilligan's Island" was about to start, but before I could move from the couch to turn on the TV, all hell broke loose. It felt and sounded like a bomb went off in the house. The noise was so loud and the house shook so violently. I thought I was actually experiencing an earthquake. I was so stunned that I could not move a muscle. After a few seconds had passed, I felt the house slowly lift up (about a foot or so) and then it just dropped with a loud boom! The house shook violently. After another few seconds had passed, the house again lifted up slowly (again about a foot or so) then dropped with another loud boom! The house shook violently. Then all was still and quiet. I was so scared that my fingers was digging deep into the couch and I still could not move. I would like to describe to you what it felt like when the house lifted and dropped. Imagine that you are sitting on the top of a good sized table, and one person located on each corner grabbed that table and lifted you slowly up about a foot off the ground. Then they suddenly let go! That's what it felt like. After the shock wore off, I went outside to check around the house for damages (or for any evidence to show what I had just experienced). I was expecting to see pieces of broken wood or even for the house to be tilted, but there wasn't anything that I could see. No reports of an earthquake on the news that evening, and I even asked my neighbors if they felt or heard anything. No one experienced anything unusual. I strongly feel that my grandmother's spirit was trying to leave the house but was not able to do so because of familiarity, long term illness, and death. (By GeeBee)

Ghost in the Machine?

Ghost in the Machine?

Many years ago I used to go and spend time with a dear friend of mine on the big island of Hawaii. As some folks are prone to go thru he was experiencing a rough point in his life and had asked me to come and visit him so we could relieve some better days we shared back in high school and just to catch up on stuff in our personal lives. For me this was great seeing as I was out of work after having hurt my knee on the job so it was always a welcome event to pay him a visit twice a year. On one of these visits something very strange and terrifying occurred and it was a defining moment with my own ghostly encounters here in these islands. My guest room was next to his den where he had amongst his treasured books on Hawaiiana and the history of Oahu a brand new desk top computer. When I asked about it he encouraged me to use it at my leisure and since he went to bed early in the evening and his home was above old Hilo town and quite isolated like a lot of homes on the big island I took him up on the offer since I was the opposite of him and usually didn’t turn in till well after midnight. One night while looking around online I happened to come across a now famous website that had a collection of ghost photos and since I was always attuned to the subject matter I began to browse thru the many pictures found in that particular gallery of the macabre and when a few caught my eye I would print them out and place them into a little pile next to me on the desk. After a few minutes I came across a photograph that began to make my skin crawl even though it looked quite ordinary at first glance. In the photo there was this beautiful little girl dressed all in pink looking at the camera with many people walking around in the background behind her. The feeling that I got from it was it was in some city in the U.K. perhaps London itself. After a few moments I found the ghost behind the child. It was a woman dressed in a red and black outfit whose legs stopped just below her knees abruptly and the impression I got was that of an unfinished painting. When my eyes went over her face I felt the atmosphere in the room become uneasy and the darkness close in and slowly grow colder around me. For some reason her features were the stuff of subtle nightmares. She had one of those pretty yet everyday faces that some women have with what I presume was long red hair pulled into a tight bun behind her head but it was her expression that made me for some strange reason want to get up and run from the room and wait in the brightly lit parlor outside till sunrise then book a flight back home. Her face had that otherworldly expression to it that made me think about that fleeting house of the dead were bodies were prepared for funerals and then it become more then that it started to look like the essence for hauntings as well as the reasonings for them. Finally it become too much for me to examine so I moved on to the next picture and almost immediately that oppressive chilly feeling in the air lifted. Soon after I was once more happily caught up in picking out what I thought were the best pics and printing them out for me to take back to Oahu. When I was finishing off that feeling from earlier came back but this time much stronger almost as if this time the woman was no longer in the photo but behind me standing in the shadows of the room were, they seem to gather in the corners like strangers keeping to themselves. Without any further need for a reason I turned off the computer and printer and beat a hasty retreat after to tell my friend of what I had just experienced. To make a long story short after speaking about the incident Jim (the name of my friend) went to make us two glasses of wine in the hopes it would help to smooth things out. I had stepped out onto the back porch while he was doing that to help clear my thoughts when again that feeling came at me this time slamming into my mind like some rude awakening. In the vision that came to me the lady from the photo was now coming for me and at any moment she would poke her head from out from around the side of the house I was facing. Just then Jim came out with the glasses of wine and as he handed one to me the lively night time sound of summer crickets from the old guava forest nearby suddenly went quiet leaving a huge void to replace the buzzing drone that was there but a moment ago. After a few beats there was what sounded like someone walking amongst the ancient dark wilderness about twenty feet in front of us and to our left. It was one of those walk for a few steps then stop for a few seconds before continuing the same pattern. I finished the wine in a few big gulps then looked at my friend as if to say that although it could be anything that only made the situation that much more creepy. We went back in and after watching, yet not watching the TV for awhile, while the buzz from the wine went straight thru our worried and terrified systems and we both decided to call it a night. Jim asked if I would feel better sleeping on a futon in his room but for some reason or other I felt doing so would make me appear much to child like so I went back to my room. The room in question had these two sliding doors that met in the middle separating the guest room from the den and lucky for me I had closed it behind me earlier when I went to go online seeing as the den had now left me feeling quite fearful due to the event that had just transpired in there only minutes ago. I got into bed and put on a little radio I brought with me hoping it would help calm my nerves. Reaching out for a nearby book on my nightstand I slowly began to feel a sense of things easing off as soothing music played quietly in the background while I read. And of course, I should have known that I was not gonna be left off the hook so easily because all of a sudden the sliding doors began to rattle. At first I thought someone had left a window open somewhere in the house and the evening breeze from outside was the culprit because it only moved a little and then it began to get louder and louder till the doors were shaking so much I couldn't avoid the sound they made. Just as I was getting up after deciding that being childish wasn't such a bad idea after all and running out of the room even more so, it stopped. After that it's all a blur so perhaps memory can be kind in that regard when things that scare us try to overwhelm the human psyche. The next morning I went to the dining room and as both Jim and I were eating I noticed how quiet he was and looking like he had something on his mind. When it became too much for me I finally told him what happened when I went to bed. He listened not saying much but when I was done he told me that when I had left he started to hear what sounded like the chairs in the breakfast room we were now in being dragged across the expensive stone tiles and since the house had ceilings at least twenty feet above us the acoustics in his home were quite amazing especially when he would just sit around with me and play some old school tunes or opera which he loved with a passion. Speaking of loud noises. Right when he was done telling me all of this we both heard the printer from the den start up. With uneasy steps we went over to the door and peeked in and as we did a single photo emerged from it. It was the photo of that ghostly woman who had terrified my senses the night before. I watched in startling horror as cold as any early Hilo morning as her face emerged with that graveyard smile on it. How the printer had turned on by itself I have no idea and how it had printed out a picture I had shunned was even a bigger mystery. I believe we went out for the day after that and when we got back we made sure the computer stayed off and we both went back to that bottle of wine from the night before. The hangover I had the next morning was worth the attempt to obscure that nagging question I had with me that entire day while we were away from home. Was there a ghost in the machine? Writing this an even bigger question comes to mind. Is that photo still out there online, and if so how many more people may have already shared the fate I had on that night long ago on the big island where both Jim and myself learned there are far worse problems to get over than the ones we know of.... Something Strange in Hawaii Kai

One night my wife and youngest daughter were both saw a shadow go up our stairs. Then a few weeks ago, my oldest daughter's boyfriend was sitting in the living room and he saw a shadow go up the stairs. Since that time, he said he thinks a ghost attached itself to him because he started feeling "weird" so his mother took him to see a priest and then he felt much better. He has refused to come in the house since. In the downstairs bathroom, a cabinet door has closed by itself many times. Think I'm watching too much Ghost Adventures..... (By E.N.)

One Saturday around 5:30 in the morning I went jogging from Whitmore village to Pomoho on Kam Hwy. It was a nice and quiet morning. When I was jogging I started hearing footsteps behind me running and getting closer and faster. I knew nobody was behind me but maybe I was wrong. Well the footsteps finally came right up to me and I turned to look at that person and nobody was there! I was never one to believe in ghosts, until that happened to me. (By Anonymous)

The Pearl City Cultural Center

The Pearl City Cultural Center

Went to the Pearl City Cultural Center one night to see my daughter's dance performance. During intermission, lots of the people in the audience went outside to do 'whatever'. Next thing, I felt something weird, like somebody was looking at me on my right but in the row just behind me, so I turned to look and there were these two 'teenage' spirit girls sitting there next to each other looking at me. They looked like regular teenage girls but just in spirit. That place has a bunch of spirits there for sure, you can just feel it. (Anonymous)

Another Incident at Work

My boss told me he was the last one after everybody went home and was closing up. He said he turned off all the lights in the back then walked back to his office to shut off his computer. Then after he walked outside the office and saw all the lights and the fan on! He said he knows for sure he turned off everything. And as he walked out of the building and to his car he saw one of the other managers from the other division's truck outside so he thinks that guy entered our side and turned it on. After my boss told me about all that, I asked that other division's manager if he had happen to come to our side and turned the lights and fan on but he said no he didn't even come to our side. I wonder sometimes because when it's closing time it's only me and my boss but once in a while you can hear somebody walking around. You can hear squeaking on the floor that sports shoes make but then nobody else is around. (By Anonymous)

Another Incident at Work

In a Big Department Store

I had a strange experience at a 'big department store' on the Leeward side. I was looking at some batteries that were stocked on the side of one of the main walkways. There wasn't all that many people in the store. When I stood there looking at all the batteries which ones to get, somebody came walking down the aisle and stopped about maybe 5 feet sorta behind me standing there, so I figured he was politely waiting for me to move aside or was waiting till I was done. (And yes, it was a 'he'. Somehow I knew that.) I'm not somebody to hog a spot so I turned around as I moved some to the side, and was stunned to see 'nobody' there. Made me think there must be something to 'ghosts' because spooks was the farthest thing on my mind. Never really believed because I never experienced anything. I don't know what that experience really was. All I know is that I know is my side view actually saw somebody walk and stop behind me, like real, and I could even feel it. Same as if somebody came and stood behind you but when you turn around to acknowledge their presence, there's nobody there. Yup, it was a strange experience for me alright. I know what I saw, I know what I felt. Makes me wonder IF there's no such thing as ghosts, then what the hell did I experience? Does that mean you cannot always trust what you see, hear, or even feel? (By Anonymous)

Beach by Kahuku 9-Hole

One night me and my friend went night fishing overnight down the shore by Kahuku's 9-hole golf course. We wasn't having much luck catching anything but was still good fun so we were just hanging out having a few and talking. Was around 2-3 a.m. when we started seeing shadows walking near where we was and we were the only ones there (and no, we wasn't drunk or anything). The shadows were people, I guess "shadow people" and was walking around on the beach, by our truck, by the bushes. And the night was really quiet but we could hear voices talking. Sounded like at a distance but yet nearby but you couldn't hear what was said. There was one time we did hear though, somebody said, "Hey!" We just jumped up and took off to go in the truck and locked the doors till we eventually fell asleep. When daylight finally came we had good luck because we caught so much fish that day! I guess the spirits gave us good luck. (By B. C.)
