We live in the Gentry housing (built in 1986, one of Ewa's newest development at the time). Anyway, in 1996, about 7 years after we moved in, my grandfather (who was 73 at the time, and of sound mind), was washing dishes in the kitchen. Our kitchen has two windows; one over the sink which faces the side of the next-door house, and another which faces the street. Anyway, he was jus washing dishes and he sees a local man walk right pass the window (the one over the sink) heading for the street. He was dressed in a tank top, shorts, and what appeared to be a baseball type hat. So my grandfather drops what he's doing, opens the front door, opens the gate, runs outside to the street, and looks around the corner. No one. The creepy part is that the iron gate we have it's obvious when it's opened or closed, you can hear it. It didn't make a sound. How is it that a person that is just casually walking pass a window (I don't know who he was or how he got in our yard to begin with), can disappear in a few seconds? The time that it took my grandfather to run outside was only enough for a person to get that gate open. He wouldn't have gone around the corner that fast. What's worse, is that the same strange man didn't pass the other window, which faces the street, and that iron gate didn't open nor close (only when my grandfather opened it to run to the street to find this guy). There was another incident with the same strange man. I had my niece (who was 3 yrs at the time) playing in the living room, and I was in the kitchen making her some lunch. I heard that young children can see ghosts. Anyway, one second, she's playing quietly with her toys, and the next second, she's screaming at the top of her lungs as if she was hurt. I ran to her, and asked her what was wrong. She replied “Him! Him!” And was pointing at the front door (which was closed due to the heavy construction of the Ewa East home development project). She said the man was trying to grab my hand and pull me. I was like “Who the heck are you talking about and she kept on screaming. I said "Leave her alone" and the screaming stopped. I asked her how did the man look, and she described him the same exact way that my grandfather did, 2 years earlier. She said "He look like the guy on TV who catch the big fish" (in her terms, that meant "fisherman", she used to watch “Let's Go Fishing” with my grandfather on TV before). I told my mom and dad this, and they couldn't believe it. This is the same day that I was told about my grandfather's incident. Oh, there is one last incident that I must tell you about. One night, I came home from work about 3 am. My shift ended at 2 a.m. Anyway, I got in the house and only the stairway light was on. As I was walking up the steps, I looked into the living room. I saw a dark figure sitting on the couch in the dark. I thought it was my dad (he usually watches TV really late and there were times that he falls asleep on the couch, but with the TV on and the living room lights on). But this time, the TV and lights were off. But I didn't think nothing of it and said, "Dad, go to bed already. It's 3 a.m." Just then, my dad pops out of his upstairs room, looks down the stairs, and says "Huh? I’m in my room." I look back at the couch and the figure is gone. To this day, I haven't seen the figure or the strange man. The last incident was in early 2002 We just moved to a new house this month but used to live in between two very old cemeteries. One rainy afternoon, I had just picked up my teen from KMS and were on our way to pick up my youngest at the boys-n-girls club. As we approached Laipo Road, which is right past one of the cemeteries) both my daughter and I saw a very "out of place" and creepy young woman, just standing in the rain on the corner. Mind you, there's nothing around there and that area is so dangerous they have a mirror up just to see traffic coming because the road is so windy and curvy. So anyway, she stood out a lot because she wasn't walking, had no umbrella, and had her head hanging down. She had very long black hair, and her clothes just weren't right. She had on some kind of short tight jacket, tight jeans, and thigh-high black boots. Certainly an outfit you would see anywhere else on the mainland and even the other larger isles here, but not on Kauai - you just don't see people wearing that here. So as I waited in my car for her to cross, she looks up, and for some reason, we couldn't really see or remember her face. I motioned for her to go ahead and walk across and she very slowly just shakes her head back and forth, 'no'. So that was strange, but we went ahead and made our right turn. I then immediately looked in the rearview mirror to see what she was doing and if she had crossed the road but she was gone! There was nowhere she could have gone that fast. My daughter and I were completely creeped out, and we knew what we had just seen. Later, when I was telling the incident to a friend of my 22 yr. old son, who has lived here his whole life told me that he had never seen her but knew of a lot of people who did, from many years ago in the same spot, wearing the same "out of place" clothing with her head hanging down! (By KmronKauai) Ghostly Encounter in Kapaa Ghostly Encounter in Kapaa early 2002. I hear strange noises at night though; our couch makes this squeaky noise when you sit on it. When I come downstairs in the middle of the night to get some water, I can hear it making that noise. It is physically impossible to make that noise without sitting on it. I hear noises upstairs (like someone walking around upstairs) when I am home alone downstairs watching TV, no matter what time of day it is. I just accepted it as it is. As long as "it" or "they" don't bother me, I don't see anything wrong with it. What do you make of my stories? I don't know the history about this place, so I’m not sure about its background. (By EwaGirl706) I just happened to come across this site and saw the posting about the Halawa/Borchers Gate entrance to the Makalapa Compound. I am a former Marine and was stationed at the Marine Barracks on Pearl Harbor from Dec. 1990 to Feb. 1993. I can tell you, that I have personally witnessed some paranormal activity. First, let me fill in a few gaps in the information that you have. When I arrived at the Marine Barracks, I was tasked with pulling security guard duty at the Makalapa Compound. At the time, L.Cpl Borchers was murdered about six months before I was stationed there. But many of the Marines, who were on post when he was murdered, were still stationed at the Barracks. This included my Sergeant of the Guard (SOG), who happened to be L.Cpl Borchers Corporal of the Guard (COG) at the time of his death. This same COG heard the gunshots and found him dead. I have personally read the entries in his COG log book of that day. Not to mention, Marines from the Barracks stood by at the murder trial of Wendell Pichay, the man responsible for L.Cpl Borchers’ death. At the time of L.Cpl Borchers’ murder, Pichay and his cousin were terrorizing the local area with burglaries and robberies. At the time of his murder, there were no suspects. No leads. Nothing. The police got lucky when they found Pichay and his cousin standing behind a closed business, taking a leak. Pichay’s cousin dimmed Pichay out. Not to mention they were armed when they were found. This included an AK-47. It's funny you should mention the ghost car. That damn car has been terrorizing the Makalapa Gate for years. The car pulls off to the shoulder of the road with the lights off, waits for a couple of minutes, then pulls back onto Kamehameha Highway and takes off heading toward Pearl City. I had forgotten this until you reminded me. I think I might have some explanation for this phenomenon, other than a lost motorist. Pichay's cousin dropped Pichay off near the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Radford Drive. Pichay jumped the fence and walked the fence line paralleling Kamehameha Highway until he reached the Halawa Gate. Pichay’s cousin drove back and forth on Kamehameha Highway, waiting for Pichay. Pichay’s intent was to steal L.Cpl Borchers’ government issued a .45 Caliber handgun. Pichay ambushed L.Cpl Borchers and ran to Kamehameha Highway where he was picked up by Pichay’s cousin, whom I believe happened to be waiting for him outside the gate with his lights off. You probably don't know, but the gate at that time of the murder was not as it was when I was there standing post. It was wooded and unclear. Since his death, the government decided to clear out some trees, put the whole gate area under video surveillance, and making the post a two-man post between 6pm and 6am. When Borchers was alive, he used to make regular phone calls to his girlfriend from a certain telephone in the Pacific Fleet Headquarters Building. It just so happens that this building has its own paranormal activity. This building happens to be sitting on top of a tunnel used as the makeshift morgue to those who died during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The building is alarmed and the alarms are monitored. A sentry walks the building at night. The basement offices are the only ones that are active after dark. The remainder of the building is closed off. One of the jobs of the walking sentry is to check the locked and alarmed doors, and document the checks in a log book. I cannot tell you how many times the entry door to where Borchers use to call his girlfriend would be physically checked and found to be locked, only to later have the alarm go off signifying that it was unlocked. When the Sentry checked, it was unlocked. No one had come or gone out of that room. This was a regular occurrence. It's funny to see that the days that it occurred, coincided with Borchers set duty schedule. This was completely separate of any of the other paranormal activity. Footsteps walking the outside walkways and no one's there. Footsteps, splashes, per se, on the walkways like someone was walking in the rain. Even thought the walkways were dry. Doors that were shut and locked were found later to be open and unlocked. Even after being physically checked every half-hour to an hour. Even the alarmed ones. Over time, the Marines who were assigned to the Marine Barracks when Borchers was killed moved on to other duty stations. By the time it was over, there were only two of us that new the intimate details of the murder. We got a new SOG and he did not believe any of the ghost stories. That was until a couple of the Marines got the bright idea of taking a Ouija board up to the room where Borchers made his phone calls. I believe that a Ouija board is a portal to hell. I wanted nothing to do with their impromptu investigation. They went up there with a list of questions pertaining to Borchers, written by the SOG. Even the SOG didn't even know the answers to the questions that he was asking. The new Marines did not know any of the answers to these questions prior to their little session, but came back with all of the answers. There was no way that they could have found out the answers to their questions by any other means. Not only did the spirit whom they got the answers from identify itself as Borchers, but they happened to come across a few other spirits that they wished that they had not. They were legitimately scared when they returned. They got rid of the board. I read somewhere online (possibly here) about the "Ninja" ghost of Makalapa Gate. It's funny that someone named it since I was stationed there. But the name is quite appropriate. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one, not to mention three other people on duty at the time, which has experienced this entity. At the time, I was the COG. The four of us not only witnessed this thing, but literally chased it around the Pacific Fleet Headquarters for 30 minutes, jumping off the Makalapa Drive side guard shack roof, and running from Makalapa Drive and then, to what is now known as Luapele Drive. At the time I was there, this use to be a large field. Because it was now out of the building and onto the compound, it causing me to have to shut the entire compound down. It moved quickly, it was able to jump from point to point, and made no noise. One of the Marines was so scared that he locked himself in his guard shack and refused to go back on post. I had to relieve him and put another Marine in his place. Mind you, that this Marine was fully armed with an M16. This entire event was investigated and documented, but I'm sure it was buried somewhere. So that's my stories, told to the best of my abilities with no embellishment. (By Marine Mike) Pearl Harbor Haunts Pearl Harbor Haunts Back in the day, few of my friends and I used to go night diving till really late at night. One night, we went night diving very close to the resort on the North Shore. It was around 2:30 a.m. and we were walking on the beach's shore. It was dark, and we felt something was following behind us. It felt like a big presence. When that presence was close behind us, we turned around to see this huge black cloud-like wall that went right through us as it passed us! Then suddenly it was gone. We don't know what that was, but it sure frightened us at the time. That was surely the last time we ever went night diving down there. (By Blayne) My Graveyard Experience When I was in high school, I accompanied my mother to Oahu Cemetery in Nuuanu to look for one of her relative's grave that she hadn't visited for many years. And because she hadn't visited for many years, she couldn't remember where the grave was or what area, just that it was at that cemetery. So we walked around the cemetery in search of, I think it was her aunty's grave, to no avail. So said let's just go already. I asked, "What do you want me to do with these flowers?" She said to just pick a grave and put the flowers there. So as we slowly walked around one more round, I walked around to see which grave I should put the flowers on. Then I came across this old grave. It was a baby's grave, and I thought, "Poor thing..." and somehow knew inside me that this grave wasn't visited for many, many years. So I placed the flowers on that baby's grace and then we went home. Later that night around 8:30, I had just gotten into bed, and right outside my bedroom window, I clearly heard a baby crying. There was no mistake about that. There are no neighbors in our backyard, let alone any of our neighbors with an infant child. And that's just what it sounded like. An "infant" child. I wasn't afraid. I just felt honored, feeling the spirit of the baby had probably came to express its gratitude. (By Anonymous) The Pinbox Camera I spent my high school years at Pearl City High where I had taken a photography class where we learned how to make a pinbox camera and develop our own pictures. Well one day after making our pinbox cameras, we had to go outside and try our camera by taking a picture of something. Well one of my classmates took a picture of one of the stairwells. When that picture was developed, everyone was stunned to see what showed up in the photo... an unmistakable face of a little girl! And I'm sure you know that pinbox cameras are like Polaroids... no negatives. Our teacher kept that photo posted in that photography class for years to come. (By K.H.) Verona Village in Ewa I read about other people's experiences in Ewa near the plantation area and it's something I can relate to because I live in Ewa and sometimes we take the short cut to Kapolei passing the plantation and through Verona Village, and it always makes me feel like there's spirits walking around. It's a nice and clean area though but feels really creepy at night. (By Anonymous) Under the Plumeria Tree A long time ago, my family and I used to live near Kahala when the kids was little and to get to our house, you had to walk past the house in the front. As you walk to (or from) our house there was a plumeria tree on the side of the path. Well one day I was going to work one early morning when it was a little dark, walking from the house to my car, and wow, it stunned me to see a shadowy apparition of a man standing under the plumeria tree, just standing there, just watching me. I tell you, I wanted to run but my "macho man" personality back in those days kept me walking as if I wasn't scared, but man, I will admit, that was one of the scariest things I seen in my time! (By Anonymous) Halawa Prison I never had an experience with ghosts before, except this one time. I had to go to Halawa prison on business. I waited in a room and nobody else was there but me. After few minutes, I started feeling people standing behind me and on the side of me, looking at me. Naturally I turned around to see but nobody was there. I couldn't shake the feeling how strong and real it felt. If that wasn't enough, I started hearing them whispering! I quickly left the room and waited outside the room. Sure did scare the shit out of me. (By Anonymous) Turtle Bay Beach Halawa Prison Under the Plumeria Tree Verona Village in Ewa The Pinbox Camera My Graveyard Experience Our Scary Experience at Acid Hill Our Scary Experience at Acid Hill In the 1970's while in high school at James Campbell, my friends and I experienced a weekend night of surprised horror that sobered us up with a vow never to go there again. There were two car loads of juveniles all drunk and stoned hungry for thrills and laughter. I was a driver that night and kept scolding my friends to stop throwing out their beer bottles. One of them actually went outside to pee. He came back and said that he had heard something, like a baby crying. At first no one in our car could hear it with all the screaming going on. But, I quieted everyone and we rolled our windows down, and it was so loud as if the baby was right alongside of car. I freaked out and tried to start my car but I couldn't even get a click. Then all of a sudden my steering handle started to vibrate, and it got louder. I yelled at everyone in our car to shut up and listen. They all witnessed it as well, and one of them was constantly yelling to get us out of here. With the car not starting all, I could think of was praying and asking whatever spirits that we had disturbed, to forgive us. At that instant my car started without me even turning the key. I put it in gear and burned rubber out of there. Half way down the hill we stopped, concerned about our other 'brothers'. Some suggested we go back and some decided otherwise, and just wanted to go home. Then like a flash their car came flying by. We stopped side by side at the bottom of the road, opened our windows and started sharing our experiences. "Hey, did you hear the baby crying?", someone said. Then at that very instant the street lights on both sides turned off for a second, then back on, then off again, and back on. At that point we all looked at each other and screamed. We got back to Ewa so fast, not even stopping for eats or anything. We drove to our favorite park and vowed never to mess with the spirits again. Someone once told me that an old Hawaiian graveyard rested near Acid Hill. I now believe them and have since developed a tremendous respect for cemeteries, known haunted sites, and above all, the spirit world. God bless their souls and help them find their way to peaceful and eternal rest. Amen. *Please note that this story that I have shared with you is my real life "god's truth" experience.
