As I was walking home, I started hearing footsteps walking behind me. When I turn around to look behind, no one was there and the footsteps would stop. I'd continue walking, and so did the footsteps behind. Again, I'd turn around to look, and again, the footsteps would stop. Each time, the footsteps were getting closer and closer, but strangely, would never seem to catch up and pass me. Then all of a sudden, the footsteps was right behind me. I turned quickly around, and boom! A pair of red eyes with nobody was right there looking at me! I ran like hell all the way home, not looking back. When I got home, I saw my grandpa, a pure Hawaiian with a strong connection with spirits. He knew I went through something and scolded me for not listening, when he told me if ever I went through something like that, not to turn around, especially if I know it's not "a person"! (By Kaimana) I was 18 years old. I was spending the week with my friend and her family in Kohala on the Big Island. It was around midnight and I had decided to sneak out of their house alone to go meet some boys. As I hurried up the road on foot, I began to hear voices. A few bats flew around in the sky. I looked over to my right at the old graveyard on the Makai side of the road. I kept going trudging up a hill a little faster now. I began to hear voices. I spun around, no one was there. I then heard the laughter of children. It was tiny and soft at first, then grew louder and louder. I freaked out and ran back to my friend’s house. When I told my friends mom what had happened she told me that just over a hundred years ago there had been an orphanage on the opposite side of the road. Right across from the graveyard. She said that it had burned down and several children had died there. (By Kiana) Children Laughing I remember there was a time a few years back, I was sitting with one my friends in her driveway, playing ukulele, and singing, as we usually do every night. We lived on a street that had a gulch in the back of the houses, and we both saw a little man, like a gnome sized man run away from the house, across the street, and run across the gulch to the other side that was filled with a field of wild grass and over grown trees. We both agreed that we saw it and kept it between us. A few nights later, we brought it up with my friends parents over dinner. Her mother was stunned and told us a store of when she was her daughter’s age, she used to play in the fields across the gulch and the made a little tree house and everything. But there was a little man that called them to play, and then she found out it wasn't a man at all, it was mischievous spirit, and it had possessed her. She told us she had to have an exorcism and though she's ok, but she warned us to never go there. I listened. (By Daemerson M.) A Little Man in Ka'u A trip to the Big Island in 1999 was a birthday gift to my husband, who had never been there before. We were staying at the Aston Kona Inn (now called Resort Quest Kona by The Sea). We were there for a total of 4 days and 3 nights. Nothing about our room was unusual or out of the ordinary. I normally get "vibes" from creepy places, but come to think of it, all of Kona gave me the creeps! The room itself was very ordinary. That is, except for the wee hours of the morning. The first night I awoke in the dark for no reason. Normally when I wake up in the middle of the night it’s for a reason; coughing, having a bad dream, hearing a noise or having to use the bathroom. Nothing of the sort. I looked at the alarm clock. It was 4:04 A.M. Perplexed, I went back to sleep. The following night, I awoke again. The alarm clock said it was 4:04 A.M. I brushed it off as a freaky coincidence, but I was again taking an inventory in my mind; did I hear something? Did I have a bad dream? Did I need to use the bathroom? But there was no explanation, just like the previous night. The last night we were there I woke up again for no apparent reason; my eyes flew open. I was scared to look at the alarm clock but felt compelled...and it said 4:04 A.M! I couldn't go back to sleep as I was too freaked out, but just kept my head buried under the sheets, periodically looking over at my husband to see if he was still alive. I was scared. I was glad that was the last night we were spending at the Aston. I don't think I could have taken one more night of waking up at 4:04 A.M. I should have said something to the front desk when we checked out. Maybe they could have told me about the room we were in. Maybe something happened there at 4:04 A.M. Maybe someone died? Committed suicide? Murdered? Maybe I didn't want to know. I also wonder why I didn't remember the room number...normally I would remember things like that. But maybe it’s good I forgot. At the time, it was used as a private beach leased for the purpose of running tourists out for a day tour...swimming, fishing, canoeing, nature walks, barbeque and all the Olympia beer and fruit punch you could drink. Mahi'ula, known for having been the favorite summer playground and bath for King Kamehameha's wife, Queen Kaahumanu and her large entourage. The remains of a huge rectangle bath made completely of stone were still visible at that time and murky waters with overgrown weeds and scum. We lived on the property in an authentic grass hut that was elevated on a stone platform accessed by stone steps and surrounded by 'ili'ili rocks...Hawaiians' early warning system. We were the only occupants of over a mile of secluded white sand beach (private, locked gate) with superb fishing and magnificent sunsets. No running water or electricity. The outhouse was located 50 yards away past the Queens' bath. It comes alive with the passing of the sunset. There were two extremely large, very fierce red Doberman pinschers on the property were chained on long, heavy chains to cement rings in the ground. These beautiful man-sized dogs would begin digging holes in the sand as soon as it began to get dark. The pair would literally be self-buried underground before total dark. No howling, no dogs, nothing. Full darkness would bring the outside alive and we would be Inside of the grass hut by that time, and you could hear all sorts of things right outside our grass thatched walls; women singing, babies crying, people laughing and talking, chanting, drums beating, someone(s) walking around the grass shack on those 'ili'ili rocks. I mean you name it, it was going on. And all in pure Hawaiian. My boyfriend and I shared a single bed, and one night after lights out (kerosene lamp) we heard someone walk on the 'ili'ili outside and proceed up the three steps that mounts the living platform of our grass hut. Inside, the floor is also covered with 'ili'ili and we heard It crunch around to stop at the side of our bed. Both of us are facing the wall with our backs to the room. We knew it was there as we could hear it breathing and we got very warm. It felt like a very large, very warm male. Think large body mass. Thankfully, it walked out of the room, down the steps and away. My boyfriend and I both said at the same time, "Did you feel that?!" We lasted just three months but remember it so very clearly still...30 years later. Chicken skin! (By Lorriek) Mahiula Mahiula The Old Hawaiian Lady The Old Hawaiian Lady I grew up on the Big Island, in Hilo. One night, I was in my room playing with toys. I could hear what sounded like an old woman calling my name from outside my bedroom window. But it was night time and I didn't want to look, or even answer, so I kept playing. After a while, it was bedtime. Getting ready to jump into bed, I turned off the light, and the moment I turned off the light, at the window I saw and old Hawaiian lady with spooky eyes glaring at me! I yelled and turned the light back on but she was gone. My dad came to see what was going on, so I told him. He just told me to go to bed, it was just my imagination, but I know it wasn't. I mean, why would a young kid imagine something like that! (By Kealii) A King's Hotel in Kona A King's Hotel in Kona When we went to dinner at the King Kamehameha Hotel in Kailua-Kona one day, we parked our car in a corner stall, and after our dinner when we headed back to our car it was mysteriously moved two stalls over. Nobody knew anything about it and there were no situations going on in the parking lot that would have maybe have our car towed two stalls over. Passing the hotel just two weeks later, we were all surprised to see that corner parking stall was suddenly covered with flowers! (By Ernie) A Hotel in Kona A Hotel in Kona I don't remember the name of the hotel in Kona because it was a long time ago, but my husband and I were vacationing on the Big Island, ending the second half our our vacation in Kona. When we got to the hotel to check in, our hotel room wasn't even ready and cleaned for us, so we had to wait. We waited outside the room while the maid was cleaning the room. As she was cleaning, I started having visions of an ancient Hawaiian warrior or two, also seeing blood-shed a really long time ago. Why in that room, I don't know. My guess is it's not actually the room, but that area a really long time ago, way before the hotel was built. I'm not saying I'm right or psychic or anything, just what I saw and felt. (By Anonymous) My wife and me took a little neighbor island vacation to the Big Island and stayed at the King Kamehameha Beach Hotel. And we had a really weird experience at our stay there. My wife went into the bathroom and came out, asking me what I had said. I told her that I didn’t say anything, though she insisted she heard me telling her something from where I was. Then another time I went into the bathroom, and I heard her talking to me and came out and asked what she said. But she said she didn’t say anything. That’s when she said, “See??” Weird! (Anonymous) King Kamehameha Beach Hotel King Kamehameha Beach Hotel Ke'ei Beach Experience I My name is John Ka'uanoe'opana'ewa Andrade and I am a native Hawaiian. I live on the Big Island of Hawai'i. My experience was at Ke'ei beach which is on the Southern part of the West coast. Me and my family were staying at a house by the beach. We were all sleeping and all of a sudden I wake up and hear voices in fluent Hawaiian. I figure that’s it my auntie and my uncle outside so I go back to sleep. About two hours later I hear what sounds to me like wood being banged together. I am convinced that there's someone trying to get in the house so I look out the window by the front door. I don't see anything so I start walking back to my room. Then all of a sudden I hear it again but louder. I turn around and look out the window and what I see are 2 spirits with wooden Hawaiian war clubs fighting. They were see through and were legless. I start to scream but can't because I feel something choking me. I then get control and go back to bed and stay there for the whole night. The next morning I find out from my uncle that there was a war on the grounds that the house was on and that it was Pokane night last night. I will never go down there at night ever again. I felt weird and felt sadness and anger, I just tried to ignore it. I keep hearing little sounds behind in the distance. I kept looking but nothing was there. We finished fishing and went back to my aunty’s house by Ke’ei Beach and I still felt weird. I finally look behind me and see a black figure just disappear in front of me. Never again will I go to Ke’ei beach at night. (By Zachary Andrade) Ke'ei Beach Experience II "KE'EI BEACH"KONA COAST, BIG ISLAND Dear Haunted Hawaii, how do I thank you for your words of encouragement because I have more to tell you. This happened to me on the Big Island of Hawaii. A girlfriend of mine, her family owns a cattle ranch and when the cruise ship we were on docked at Hilo she picked us up so we could spend the day together and see the Richards ranch. We were so excited, but we also wanted to see the volcano and the lava fields too. So she took us to Madame Pele's park and we went to the center, and then since she had grown up there we went slightly off the beaten path. One lava field was black as the eye could see all around us and there was a small observatory to climb and look out over the vast lava fields. It was awesome to say the least, black and shiny, every which way you looked. My husband and friend were talking, and I heard them talking but for some reason my eyes were focused towards the right side of the lookout where I saw a spot of red blowing in the wind. I thought hmm that’s weird, what could be red blowing so far away and being red. Then it seemed to be a bit closer and I realized it looked like a woman with long flowing black hair that was also blowing in the wind. Now keep in mind I didn't know any stories about Madame Pele, and I also realized my hubby and friend were still talking and looking in the same direction but not reacting so I thought they don't see what I am seeing. I had a camera in my hand and I almost took a picture but something said to me, NO DO NOT DO THAT !!!!! It was then that I saw that I was looking at a young woman in a bright red sarong with long flowing hair when she slightly turned her head towards me. I froze and she then just sunk into the lava. Then I heard my husband calling my name saying hey what are you staring at. Needless to say, I said nothing because I thought for sure I was going a bit nutty. The entire month that we spent in Hawaii I had experiences happen to me basically on a daily basis, and yes I do have a bit of Hawaiian blood thru my Great grandmother. I felt like I had finally come home and a very long journey and after following my husband in the Army for 27 yrs, I have never felt this before. I also felt like a stranger wherever we lived, but not in Hawaii. I was finally home. I think you're right, maybe my past life is remembering. Mahalo for listening to me and I hope to meet you in person. We are trying to move home, lol. Mahalo, Dorothy Madame Pele Madame Pele Kealakehe High School Kealakehe High School Hi my name is, Jade Torres. And one day I was at school and I was by my class in Y building. Then I was sitting on the bench outside of my class and I felt like there was something there with me. So I looked at the classroom door and I saw the door opening by itself. So I went to go call my teacher in the other class and she came outside. Once she came outside the door shut really fast. And she asked me what was going on and I said I don't know I swear I saw the door opening by itself. And so she went back into the class and then I looked back 1 more time and again I saw the door opening by itself so I called my teacher again and as she was coming out it shut again really fast. Then she was getting mad cause she thought I was playing around with her. So after that day I never did go back to Y building at Kealakehe High School. I ignored it and tried to cope with what was happening. Then I heard it again, so I looked and I saw a light coming from the coffee trees then it disappeared. I ran back to the house and I was trippin’ out. I learned my lesson.
